Hello,
I am a N.T. Mum of my 7 year old Aspie. We have just explained to him about Asperger's because he's been stressed and wondering why he's different.
Daniel loves dinosaurs, dragons and mythical monsters. He is talented with puzzles, leggo, magnetex etc
He just had his birthday party and did it his way. He hates cake because of crumbs, but loves icing. So we made different coloured icing and created a dinosaur world. Little plastic dinosaurs were stuck in the icing. The dinosaur world had a volcano erupting and a swamp.
Daniel doesn't like candles, so we didn't have them. Eating the 'cake' was fun - the kids were given a teaspoon and had a great time eating the icing.
I love learning from Daniel. He does things his own way, which often makes more sense than the conventional way.
Daniel lives in Queensland, Australia. He sees his special ed teacher 2/week for 30 minutes. The special ed teacher has been teaching him about making eye contact when talking to people. However Daniel finds this extremely stressful. Any advice?
Any general advice and words of encouragement for Daniel and me would be great.
Thanks
Hi Daniel!
Eye contact can be hard to do but I find that people don't really notice if you look at their face instead of directly at their eyes when they're talking. I like to look at people's lips. I read their lips along with listening. It helps me to concentrate on what they're saying, too.
P.S. I hope you had a happy birthday!

I say hi to Daniel and Smelena too! (from across the ditch, in NZ!)
I also wish Daniel a Happy Birthday!
I'm also interested in building things. Often when I construct something from Lego, I want to take it apart just so that I can build it again! I wanna get a hold of your Magnetix, they sound fun! (I have a partial fascination with magnets too)
Don't worry about being or feeling different Daniel. You're as lucky as any of us here to be able to think differently than everybody else. Some days I wake up in the morning and feel like shouting "Hey world! I think differently from you! Ha ha!" I wish you the best of luck, and I hope that you will join WP someday so we can chat together!
To Smelena: The key thing with Aspies is patience. It can take a long time for us to learn and/or get used to new things and changes, especially in our younger years when we can be less patient. For eye contact, I suggest having Daniel getting used to just casually looking people in the eyes without engaging in conversation, then move on to conversational eye contact. Also, to keep any possible tantrums and meltdowns to a minimum, keep a certain routine going around, and give him some pre-knowledge of anything For example, my parents keep to having certain meals on certain days, like Pizza on Saturdays and Sausages and Potato Wedges on Friday (you can limit this to just Daniel so you can vary your own meals when you feel), and giving me at least an hours notice before I have to mow the lawns. Hope this helps!

Me too with the lips, or the nose, the forehead, but eyes convey a lot more information to an aspie.
I do have a problem understanding people, so watching their lips helps hearing, processing.
I had a big problem with the eye thing, NTs are weird about it. I am 60, I can be working a computer, or anything else, and someone comes behind me and says Unahh, or something else clever. I say Yes? and they repeat themselves. So I stop what I am doing, turn my chair around, face them look at their lips, and they say something like, What about them dogs? I say, a wonderful species, man's best friend, and turn back to the keyboard. Then starts the Uhhnna stuff again, till I stop again, turn, and it seems they want to tell me about a sport involving a ball. By the time we have been through this three times I say, Is this work related? and they get all upset and leave.
I will tell you about the eye thing, I want to know about Unahua, or Unahh, or whatever it is, and why you cannot speak to someone from behind or the side while they are working, and you interupting, but insist they stop and pay visual attention to you.
This brings up problem two, I know you want to be looked at, you crave it, and I think demanding it of small children is weird. My mother did the anger thing, you look at me while I am insulting and demeaning you, then she said, don't look at me that way, and turned violent. The same happened with my teachers.
Aspies are known for a blank stare, some have said we look dead. So how can you not like the way I look at you? Please explain, there are 10,000 here that would really like to know what is it you see when we look at you? Considering this happens most often with mothers and teachers, I would hope it is not a sexual thing.
You demand eye contact, and when we comply, you go nuts on us. We never win this one, and it leaves lifetime bad feelings. Many here report being tortured for years over it. What is interesting is some of the younger who say, I never made eye contact till I was fifteen, then I just started doing it. Never a problem.
Eye contact problem two, most of us were bullied, besides parents and teachers, other students. I had found eye contact was very upsetting to some of my teachers, others were cool with it, they did not demand, and when we did make momentary eye contact, both quickly looked away. It was all we needed, a single flash of data. I used my best aspie stare on bullies, and scared them. One of my teachers considered having me look at her all during class the high point of her career. Whenever she looked, I was looking right in her eyes. I was told to.
When she took me to the Principal she said she did not want me in her class because she did not like the way I looked at her. The Principal asked questions, was I making noise, did I do my work, how were my grades, homework, and did I follow instruction. It seemed I did everything, she just did not like me looking at her. He asked my why I did, I told him because she told me to. I was out, and she had a nervous breakdown and went to a mental hospital. About half the teachers did not want me in their class.
Since then I have perfected a soul stealing look. I think it was because it was forced early. Dogs, children, and maybe half of adults I have no problem with, the other half, I induce terror.
So much for out directed, the beams that seem to destroy. The other is content gathering, we miss social cues, small talk, body language, but looking in your eyes I can read your deepest secrets. After years of practice I know where the hidden stuff is. I think this has something to do with the ,"Don't look at me that way!" I know where the fears are kept locked up, and can open the door. that is what happened to my teacher, she said look at me, I mistook it for in me, and I was in her head all class every day.
I know how it sounds, but there are many here who reeport the same. Others report seeing colors about materials, or machines, and can tell if a device is properly adjusted by the color of the field. I worked in dark rooms, film processing, total dark, and I can see there. There is more than just social eye contact.
Forced it becomes a lifetime problem, fixed, unchangable. Ignored they grow out of it about fifteen, then can make normal eye contact most of the time. Half measures do work, explain to you child how adults have a need to be looked at, but not in the eyes, just about the face. This is important, if I look at your cheekbones, everyone is fairly happy, looking two inches higher can cause massive problems.
From the kid's point of view, he is being told to look in peoples eyes, and when he does he sees an adult level of fear, other emotions. We can gather mass data from eyes, which is a bit much for a child. If looks could kill, is an old saying. It is best to avoid it, and easy for children who can count nose hairs and seem to be connecting.
Aspies are very honest, but if you tell him as his mother that it is alright to watch lips, count nose hairs, he will do it. Then it is a fun game you are both in on. Games are not stressful, and getting over on the world is something he must learn. You cannot turn us into non-aspies, trying leads to producing mythical monsters like me. Count Dracula has a stare like mine.
There is a KBABZ here, NZ, 16, fullblown aspie and proud of it, his name is Tim, life works for him, everyone thinks him a great guy, and he is kind and most helpful. He is very active, has pictures on the pic thread, and is a model of what Daniel can become. He is culturally much closer to you.
Us Dinos survived, then came the Psychobabble era, then the pill pushers, and now the world is changing to accept us. The current crop seems to blend into the world at twenty. They might need some extra help with their school work, but that is about it. AS was never a problem, just people who thought they should fix it.
Tell Daniel the truth, that your great grand father was a Dragon, so you are different from other people, but they should not find out. That is why he has to cover for the nest. If the neighbors ever found out you might have to breath fire.
Magnetex are way cool!
So are you Mum!

Thanks for giving them that quick bio about me! And yes, it's true, I am a pretty happy-go-lucky guy!
As Daniel grows up, you may find that he'll be unaware of some of the stresses you may have to do for him. Heck, I'm not far up the Spectrum and yet I never realized that I caused a lot of stress and bother for my mum! Don't let this encourage you though, relish in the fact that you get a different experience most parents never get, and relish the rewards at the end!
BTW Inventor, that speech was, well... informative, revealing and a bit scary. But I wish I could stare my old school bullies into submission!
Oh and yes, the main problem isn't because we're different, it's that people can't seem to be stuffed adjusting to our unique needs and differences (as shown by Inventor's bit about the Principal's office).

Don't worry daniel, there ARE people like you out there. Normal school is a bit boring at the moment but hang on because it's all building up to when you hit university and education gets really interesting. Why interesting? Because you finally get to study the subjects that you want and nothing else.

Hello, we're back from work/school now. I tried to get Daniel his own membership but he doesn't have his own e-mail yet so we'll share. Daniel's big N.T. brother Jimmy is also here.
Daniel says: I am going to be sort of crazy now and Jimmy is also.
Jimmy says: I don't like Daniels saying I'm crazy. I met some good friends at his birthday party.
Smelena says: Daniel loves being crazy. He loves wrestle fights.
Daniel says: I love Big Bad Dinosaurs. And Big Bad Dragons. And ... I might eat you!! !! And monsters will be stupid!
Jimmy asks: What do I say if people say, "Tell your brother (Daniel) to stop being annoying"?
See you later

Hello Daniel! Hey Jimmy!
I love(ed) dinosaurs as well! I like Allosaurus a lot, as well as that T-rex of course! I also like being random. But I'm not as random as my sister! I wish she posted more often here...

Kids have gone to bed.
TechnoMonk - Daniel was very excited by your comment about university.
Inventor - My mum is a retired primary school teacher. She perfected the 'teacher look' - a withering look similar to what you were discussing.
KBABZ - thanks for the advice. I definantly get stressed about things that Daniel doesn't notice.
I think we'll leave the whole looking at faces thing for now. I told Daniel your ideas about looking at lips, cheek etc but he said he hates looking at the face at all. I've noticed he'll look at faces of people he knows well, but hates looking at strangers faces.
We'll put my focus on other things for now.
See ya

Smelena,
My main role is making others seem very reasonable. My control freak teacher did ruin my education, and her own mental health. Starting a staring contest with an aspie is dumb. Just because one had to be put in a padded cell they blamed me.
My Math and Science teachers were very different, they did not make eye contact at all, they could look at the class, and you were sure they were looking at the back wall. When one did make real eye contact it was only for a split second, and it meant something good. They spoke for me, I did well in their classes, but the English Majors out voted them.
As it was a defineing issue of my youth I later studied it. In martial arts it is called stealing the will. It is a way of projecting into the mind of your opponent, breaking his concentration, sowing confusion, before beating him to a pulp. Two equally matched, the winner will be the stronger willed. Martial arts is not about phyical power, it is all mental.
I found it again in Hypnosis, eye contact hypnosis works, the trick again is reaching deeper in. There should be laws against some things I do, but they cannot figure out what it is.
After the scene in Crocodile Dundee where he brings down the buffalo with a look, I thought all Aussies knew this stuff. I know good teachers and grandmas do.
Daniel is looking at faces, of people he trusts the content of, most likely makes real eye contact with Jimmy, Mum? He is on the way at his own pace. Being a boy and an aspie, he is going to do it his way. I would say since he knows about eye contact, ask him how he would deal with it. We are a clever lot and often find other solutions.
