Who thinks Apsies are smarter than most NT's?

My intuition is that, since autistics take the low end of our IQ range out of consideration, the average IQ of aspies tends to be higher. Might be more than just this though.

No. The people who presume that are generalizing "big time." Sure, you have to have an IQ over 100 (or lower, I can't remember at the moment) to not be classified as mentally ret*d and to be able to get the diagnosis Asperger syndrome, but you cannot assume that aspies are highly intelligent in general.

Don't know. Dogs are certainly more intelligent than humans though. If humans are bored, they a) sit there complaining or b) pick a fight with someone.

If dogs are bored, they find something to do. If dogs, pick a fight with someone, it's for a reason and NOT a stupid reason like 'their fur is a different colour than mine'.

Ha ha, I think this absolutely must be true.

I suppose it balances out in the end because of the missing bits in Aspies. Some things are so obvious to me and I really cannot see how others are not seeing it, but there again, I have social bits missing and others cannot see why I don't understand them.

I admit the conversation on some first-person shooter guild forum or a political bash-turbation forum isn't going to be very stimulating or well thought, but WrongPlanet.net isn't many orders of magnitude better. I've seen intelligent NT (re: not autism-focused) forums on more academic- or theory-oriented subjects (psychology, philosophy, policy debate (not the run-of-the-mill partisan flamewars), the sciences, mathematics) and computing. Programming forums, for example, often have interesting discussion not even pertaining to programming.

Another thing I want to note is that some of the science forums I go to are filled with all sorts of brilliant people (there is a physicist that I admire over there, he is truly brilliant), and I know for sure that most of them are not Aspies.



As for the claim that WP is civil and logical, I'm not going to comment on it. I'm a moderator on a couple of other sites and I'll have you know that I do not approve of the behavior of several people over here. There is absolutely no excuse for it whatsoever.

We like to think we're smarter than NTs, but it's only a different kind of intelligence that we have.

They have what i call herd intelligence. Their understanding of each other comes from deep down in their genes - they can do things in a social setting that will leave your head spinning - a beautiful woman you're talking to suddenly turns to the guy beside you, wants no more of you, only to talk to him, and you don't even know what was exchanged between them. They do stuff like that all the time.

So, although NTs haven't the slightest interest it the things that interest me, I've never believed that I'm smarter than they are.

yes Aspies have an average range of IQ... but so do NTs.... neither state of being garantees you an above-average IQ

I would have to say it depends, because the word "smart" is very broad and consequently vague. For example, my IQ is roughly 135 (which I believe to be higher than about 99 or so percent of the population) but I feel pretty dumb sometimes. My intelligence seems to only manifest itself part of the time while other times it seems as though my brain takes a sort of "leave of absence" if you will, almost like I am physically present but seemingly mindless for a short time. I have found that there are environmental "catalysts" and "inhibitors" which can cause me to either fire on all cylinders or short-circuit at any given time and in any given environment. Unfortunately it has been difficult being able to identify exactly what these factors are. So far I have found that any type of visible interest or confidence in me on the part of others is a catalyst, while any type of verbal/audible tension or confrontations (can be either between me and another person or between two third parties), or high-pressure situations are inhibitors. There are still others which I still have not positively identified. There also appear to be environmental factors that affect exactly how socially inept I am. Thus I can either appear completely normal or completely vacant, or anywhere in between, depending on the situation, and I have yet to put my finger on any definite factors one way or another concerning this. So I have the potential to appear "smarter" or "dumber," or a host of other descriptors for that matter, than anyone else in the room at any given time. So again, I have to say it depends.

And BTW, mentally ret*d is defined as having an IQ lower than 70. I know that because I used to work with disabled children.

I cant speak for the rest of the aspies, but I sure as hell am smarter than any NT Ive ever known or heard about. And I know thats not saying a whole bunch, but one has to start somewhere.

Given that the vast majority of genius's were probably NASs, this either indicates that you've led a tremendously sheltered life, or are one of the foremost geniuses ever. If the later, I'd be curious to know what evidence you have for it.
