I've done it before - it definitely works, the helium changes the desnity of air your speaking into (makers it lower) and so your voice rises in pitch. Don't do it too much lest you suffocate from lack of oxygen. I have heard a rumour that you can severely damage your vocal chords doing it too (but never seen evidence)
