It seems like I'm always first choice. Even when I have my purse next to me. It's usually smelly old men. I change spots as soon as possible if someone smelly or creepy sits next to me.

I don't like people sitting next to me, but I have never felt I scared them off. Maybe if I end up in an urban area again, I should try to cultivate a scary persona or body odor or something.

I probably smell strongly of tobacco smoke, or might even look a bit thuggish - I'm definitely superficially unpleasant (but there's a song in my heart!).

I'm sure Glebel's just kidding LOL

In NYC, seating is at a premium--so it really doesn't matter. You have people who like to crowd you, though. That's aggravating.

Even at midnight, you still can't get a seat if you originate in certain stations.

That makes sense. I live in a small city. The smelly old man sat next to me just when the bus was filling up. It would have been more polite if he sat next to another smelly man instead.

Yeah...I can dig that, DevilKisses. I don't like sitting next to smelly people, either.

In NYC, not only are there smelly people. There are bums who smell up the whole train car. It's especially bad in the winter, when they need shelter from the cold.

I'm usually first choice, even though I avoid sitting on the first couple of front seats. Also mostly the person sitting next to me doesn't move to another seat when plenty of empty seats becomes available. I am too polite to say anything, but it does annoy me having a stranger sitting next to me for the duration.

On the bus I get there's a seat right at the front, and it's a single seat so nobody can sit there, and most old people dislike sitting there because it's up a little step, and also it's nice and warm there. I get cold on the bus because people open the windows. So I try to get that seat, but sometimes it's not always available. One time I was in that seat, and this woman got on with this kid, looked about 4-6 years old, and it wanted to sit where I was sitting, and was crying loudly, pointing to the seat and wailing "I wanna sit there!!" while the mother was paying the bus fare. I don't do well with little kids, and I felt awkward for being the reason a kid is crying. So that situation has put me off sitting in the front seat, in case the same kid gets on again.

Yes, I often find myself sitting or standing in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Usually on the train they do only if there aren't sits with less people around. On the buss I mostly sit if there are many free spots, if not I leave them for other people.

I don't understand why you expect them to get up and go to another seat when they already have one. You seem to think that they are expected to do so and they're not behaving good if they don't, but it isn't quite true. On the contrary it could be considered rude of them to do that.

I don't think I look intimidating or something, so sometimes they do sit next to me. However, I really don't like it, especially if they accidentally touch me.
I try to choose seats that can other people are less likely to choose, so to avoid them sitting next to me.

I'm not rude, but....you know....I don't like strangers sitting next to me. :?

I don't ride public transportation that much, but I'm about average as far as having people sit next to me. The reason I don't use public transportation is that the area I live in doesn't have it go to enough places for it to be convenient, so I tend to drive more often.

I haven't been on the bus for maybe a couple of years, but I don't like people sitting next to me. I hate the lack of personal space and usually sit up front where there are fewer people. Although you're supposed to let elderly or disabled people sit up front, so if anyone like that comes on the bus I try not to be a jerk and let them take my seat. :)

I would rather spend extra money on a cab where I can get taken straight to the entrance of my destination, don't need exact change, don't have to follow a bus schedule, and can take my time shopping or whatever it is I'm doing. I also hate how the bus starts and stops constantly, it's like they still build them as if it's the 50's, you can feel every tiny bump, and they still don't even have seat belts. And people often try to get on the bus before allowing passengers off first, which is very rude.

Sometimes, people tend to avoid sitting next to anybody until they're forced too so its mostly just a space issue.

Despite having excellent hygiene, and not talking, no one sits beside me if at all possible. I don't really know why, but I can't honestly say I care that much.

Since you're a non-NT you might seem "crazy" to NTs. Most people avoid people that seem off or crazy on the bus. I guess this means I'm pretty normal looking despite my blue hair.

I'm never first choice, even though i usually take the first seat (that's a facing-4-seater, giving extra legroom), and even shift my stance to be accomodating, they normally walk further back, if possible.

now, they do sit next to (or across from) me before standing, but i am often the last choice (not that i mind)

Actually most people don't like sitting next to strangers, and avoid it if they can. And it is not rude for a person to move to another seat. I see people do that a lot. I've been getting buses for 8 years now, I think I know what people do and don't do on buses.
