I'm waiting for a decision on the job, but when I crunch the numbers for the cost of a car, insurance which is really high in my state, and a commute, we are not very much better off money wise than before. But... the job is valuable because of contacts I would make and the possibility of advancement to a better job.

But my husband doesn't see that value and thinks that I should say no to the job if I get offered it. Also my husband doesn't like my idea of using some of the tax money to take the GRE test to try to get into grad school because he thinks I'm wasting money again. I can override him and I think we will have plenty of money for me to take the GRE, but how do I explain the value of the job and the value of the GRE to him? Though if I got the job I would delay the GRE to have the job for a few years, the job itself is good grad school prep.

My question is....

Is this a control issue with him, or an honest debate? Is he always such a negative person?

If his a controlling type person, there is not much you can say that will change his mind.

It is better to have something on a resume than nothing. Think of the job as a paid internship, where usually you get a little stipend.

For me, I would work the job angle before the GRE. There are many people unemployed floating around withe masters degrees. Experience seems to trump degrees in the job market. Easier to find better work while employed than not.

Yes, the best way to get a job is to have one. Its the group mentality that you are only employable if you are already employed.

Having a job will let you learn the routines necessary to keep one.

I've had to temporarily put off some of the data I collected from my study. I can't go into numbers here, but I can speak generally.

People on the autism spectrum seem to have a hard time getting started in life, so say, in their twenties, sometimes early thirties. But during that time, they seem to be gaining a much higher level of education than other people. And they are honing their social skills, which had been behind as compared to their neurotypical peers. I think the social skills are the only reason why autistic people are having trouble as young adults. They are essentially having a crash course in life, which is rough.

Okay, so then all of a sudden everything seems to get way easier. Aspies in their 30s and beyond suddenly have a lot more education than other people, more job experience (maybe from having to try so hard), are steadier people in their relationships, and are now able to socialize appropriately. By the time they get to middle age and beyond, autistic people seem to find even easier places in life, where they are better at coping with stress and setting boundaries for themselves.

In short, you are right. Take this job, take the GRE, go to grad school. Yes things will still be hard for awhile, but you're on the cusp of things getting way easier, and your life should go steadily up from here.

The GRE has a fee waiver for people who meet certain requirements, maybe you should look into that.
If you can take it for free, your husband can't have much to say about that.
The scores last for five years after you take it.
