Anybody into any of this? I used to watch all the 'chop-sockey' weekend movie blocks that every town I lived in had. It was like the 'creature-feature' shows. A block of movies they would show with all the bad overdubbing and such. Loved 'em.

Watched Bruce Lee on TV as a kid as Kato.

Didn't really know who he was, but he was cool. Really discovered Bruce Lee in '74. When in China, I went to the Ip Man (Bruce Lee's Wing Chun instructor and a Chinese Hero in his own right) museum and saw actual photos and letters and drawings that I had seen in magazines as a kid. 40 years later, I could actually see the original writings and photos.

To this day I remember my impressions of the Batman/Green Hornet crossover event.

As I got older, I discovered Jackie Chan in the movie "The Big Brawl". Again, rediscovered because in those Saturday and Sunday Kung-Fu movie shows, I'd seen him and didn't know who he was until later.

From there (in the 2000's)I found out about the 80's and 90s screwball comedies from Hong Kong. I seek out the original movies with subtitles. Actors such as Sandra Ng, Stephen Chow, Man Tat, Dai Sou (His nickname in Hong Kong...literally means the big goof or the big silly, but I forget his real name) and discovering People such as Yuen Wah (who did the famous back flip kick as a stand in for Bruce Lee in "Enter the Dragon", and also the double back handsprings into the double somersault at the very beginning), Sammo Hung (who he fought at the beginning of the movie as well...the fat guy) and others that went on to become great stars in their own right, all the way to modern stars such as Jet Li and Donnie Yen.

I do love the movies. They are filled with great stories. If you get past the hokey acting of the earlier movies. They are much better now on that front.

John Woo started out working on Bruce Lee films. So much there.....

Anybody?

Yeah, I like Chinese movies, mainly wuxia, though I'll watch other things if they are something interesting like horror. I don't like cheesy movies much unless they are comedies. My favorites include all those Ip Man films (Ip Man 1-3, The Grandmaster, etc), CTHD, etc.

I have all the Ip Man movies. Donnie Yen is the man! Cheesy is so subjective. Which ones? I do love the comedies. Loved when Stephen Chow and Sandra Ng would work together.

Loved her comedy "Changing Partners" (Romantic buddy cop from the 80s)

Love DoDo Cheng for her early movies like "Her Fatal Ways" (Fish out of water buddy cop movie)

Loved all their horror comedies of the times mentioned.

Have the full Bruce Lee collection in original languages. Really makes a difference in a couple of scenes in "Way of the Dragon."

Haven't seen a lot, but I recently watched "The Legend of Drunken Master" with Jackie Chan. The stepmother, played by Anita Mui, is priceless

OH Crap!! I forgot about her!! She's amazing!!

She passed away though

First time I saw her was "Rumble in the Bronx."

I've got a few of her movies too. Look her up on YouTube. She was called the Madonna of the East. Her singing was amazing.

She was funny as hell too. She was in this weird Andy Lau movie when he first started out. She played twins LOL I'll dig it out if you like so I can give you the English name.

And, for westerners, the scene where her bag is stolen and she's yelling "Get him" while sorta dancing, well, that sort of thing really happen.

I hve seen the odd finger pointing (Odd by western standards of body language) and the finger signs like the curled finger style pointing made by old sytle performers. Many of the mannerisms are actually quite realistic in practice in their native culture. Not the westernized one.

Here's a link to the title sequence of two of my favorite films....they love to parody James Bond.

From Beijing with Love as Ling Ling Chat (literally 007)

And,

Forbidden City Cop

They are great parodies, campy as hell, make fun of their own culture and others.

And I dare anybody to see this one and not get a bit misty at the end. The little boy is played to perfection by a little girl. Stephen Chow has been genderbending all throughout his career.

My childhood (0-12) was spent in Trinidad & Tobago. Less that 1% of the population of T&T are Chinese and I'm related to them. My grandfather, Pa, worked in a Chinese restaurant all week, came home Friday night then went back to work Sunday afternoon. Technically, the only time I got to spend with him was Saturday afternoon, and that time was spent at Ascot Cinema watching chop socky films.

I had to read the subtitles but Pa didn't because he understood what was being said. Through him I was introduced to (Jimmy) Wang Yu, Angela Mao Ying, Chen Sing and many others. Back in those days there were no ratings board so, yes, I was introduced to female nudity at the ripe old age of 11. )Even back then, though, I'd rather stare at Ron Ely than those Asian lasses, but that's another issue altogether).

It's interesting that, after all these years, I still watch the occasional Shaolin or sword fighting films. I could barely look at the sword fighting ones in the past because they were gory as hell. Even today, Lone Wolf and Cub/Shogun Assassin is still super brutal, but I can handle those now. Back then? Oh hell no.

You know, its funny you mentioned the nudity. They have a different view of nudity in the rest of the world compared to America. They basically see our viewpoint as prudish and immature. There is just an acceptance.

And, I can get Ron Ely. He was a good looking man, athletic body and not overly developed. Yeah, I get it :)

I know enough Cantonese that sometimes I can read the line and think...."Thjat's not what he said!" LOL

I also love it when they speak for about 2 minutes straight and the subtitle is , "He said, NO!"

LOL

I never liked the crazy wirework though. But two of my favorites from HK in the 60s is "One Armed Swordsman" and "Come Crink with Me" with Cheng Pei Pei.

I STILL have a crush on her.

Donnie Yen is definitely pretty good. I've watched everything he's been in since. I mean the "cheesy" martial art films where they insert terrible dubs and action sound effects. I know not all of them are bad, and some are much better without the dub, but I simply wont watch a bad dub. I don't even like the CTHD dub...

As for other movies, I like horrors such as Three... Extremes or romance like Painted Skin (also with Donnie Yen, but not much martial arts). I haven't watched many of the older movies because I don't like the washed out look and sound.

Shing Fui-On? He died in August 2009. He died of Hepatitis B resulting from liver cancer.

I used to love Hong Kong films as a teenager and in my early twenties. Jackie Chan, Stephen Chow, Ng Man Tat, Danny Lee, Yuen Biao etc etc. I definitely had a soft spot for the ruder Category III films too. Red to Kill is my favourite - that is such a nasty, perverted rapefest and its attitude towards people with disabilities is pretty shocking. :D

I know what you meant by the dubbing. I was referring to the parts in "Way of the Dragon" where the original audio makes sense. They had to overdub everything even n China and Japan. But there is one scene in particular where Bruce Lee is threatening the mob boss. In English he starts to tell him off and the girl stops him to say "He wouldn't understand anyway."

When he Speaks Cantonese, it makes sense because he then pantomimes threats.

This is one of my favorite Music Videos of all time. It has about everything you could want in Chinese MV. Covers about 3 dynasties in costuming, has Chinese Zombies (Their walking dead, the hopping ghosts), concubines, The head Eunuch (Gong Gong), a clueless emporor, homages to martial arts and other things....
"Gong Gong with a Headache" (Gong Gong Pin Tou tong...公公偏頭痛)

Yeah, but all porn is still illegal in both the People's Republic of China, and hardcore porn is still illegal in Hong Kong.

You know the people I am talking about then.

The crude stuff is funny. Love Eong Jing just because he is so crude. I have the Kung Fu Mahjong movies as well as the Golden Chicken Series and all the "Her Fatal Ways"

Different things. Nudity is not pornography.

Have you seen The Unmatchable Match or The Law Enforcer, both also starring Danny Lee? He was great in both of those.

I've long had a major crush on Zhang Ziyi. I especially liked her in House of Flying Daggers, which is probably my favourite Chinese movie...

Image

Other Chinese movies I like (in no particular order):

Kung Fu Hustle
Shaolin Soccer
Drunken Master II (I found the 1978 original slightly boring)
Hero
Curse of the Golden Flower
The Banquet
Reign of Assassins
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

BTW, a lot of the historical Chinese epics make a lot more sense once you become acquainted with the history of Chinese imperial dynasties...
