I've been like this since I was a little kid. I used to obsess about black and Indian(South Asia) people. As the years went by I kept obsessing about different cultures. I feel connected to the cultures I obsess about, but I know I'm not part of them. That makes me pretty sad.

I get obsessed with different cultures as well and I like to celebrate that.

You could become an anthropologist--then you'd have a legit reason to study other cultures. :)

It's a lovely thing to be into other cultures.

This means you don't have too many inbred prejudices against other cultures.

Which is a great quality in a person.

You know. You may have this obsession because you may be going through an identity crisis. I had this happen to me back in my late 20's. After my mom passed away. I inharantence some money from her and used it to do world travel. In essence, I was trying to find my place in this world at the time. After spending about a year and $25K traveling around the globe. I found myself bummed out and lost my all obsessions with other cultures. In the end, it was a hard and very expensive lesson learned. Of course, this was long before I got any of my ASD diagnoses.

I've had obsessions with other cultures since I was a small kid. Guess this is a very long identity crisis...

You would have made a great anthropologist.

I like seeing other cultures and seeing how they live. That's why I love traveling so much. I love observing people especially if they're from another culture.

I have obsessions with particular cultures. I think it's a great thing to have an obsession in!

I'm not American.

Frequently, when people say, "The Americas," they mean the whole Western Hemisphere--South America, included.

If somebody says "North American," they mean both, or either, the United States or Canada. Sometimes, Mexico is included in the term "North American."

I too am quite interested in other cultures, though not exactly obsessed with them. I suspect one of the main reasons for my interest is that the culture that surrounds me seems so lame that I feel there's got to be something else out there that knocks "my" culture into a cocked hat. But so far all I've found are cultures that, while looking a lot better than "mine" in some respects, are worse in other ways.

I dont really see how its a problem.

There is nothing wrong with getting interested in other cultures. You might even combine it with other interests.

Like you apparently are a musician, and music lover. And play the according. Nothing wrong with combing that with ethnomusicology, and studying the various accordion music cultures around the world (European, Cajun, Tejano/Conjunto, and European polka music, etc).

Your other obsession optometry...well eyesight is pretty universal- so maybe that doesnt apply. But who knows? Maybe you could join the Peace Corp and fit poor kids with glasses in struggling poor countries over seas, and an interest in anthropology would help.

The only problems with getting obsessed with, and maybe immitating, other cultures is that you might do something inappropriate like take some religious symbol out of context in an offensive way. Something like that.

I think that he meant "America's" (possessive). Not "the Americas" (plural).
