I worked a night position in a warehouse once. It was a pretty good job. Mostly I was using forklifts to move pallets around and got to spend a lot of time alone just getting the work done. I liked it better than customer contact positions.

That sounds good. There's an auto parts DC nearby and I starting to like the idea of getting a job there and maybe being able to work nights. I'm worried about having to lift heavy stuff (and not being considered for a job if I say I can't) and also wondering what the social environment might be like. I can't be hemmed up in a small space too much, I need to walk and move around and driving forklifts would be fun. Mostly I just need to be able to do my work by myself without people bothering me.

My experience from some years back:
Driving fork lifts is fun.
Moving things with them is even more fun.
Warehouse work is relaxing if there are few other coworkers & your tasks are clear and doable.
If you wear good shoes its often also good exercise.

But, working nights really, really messes me up. I get confounded every year by the changing hours of daylight, too.

I was an order picker in 1980. The social environment wasn't delightful. I was bullied.

It wasn't exactly an intellectual environment.

Night shift might be different, though. Eccentricity is usually tolerated more among night shift workers.

I once worked at a big box home improvement store. One summer I was left in charge of the warehouse where the seasonal products were kept, essentially a mini distribution center: it was an absolute dream job that I smiled on the drive to and frequently worked late just because I enjoyed it that much. I worked alone, was trusted and had very little interaction with others: I even worked an 8-5 shift.

Sadly, petty egos and jealous coworkers made it last a total of three months. I was forced to work nights even though that area wasn't light up at night and closed at dark and they let it fall apart. Still, that short time period was one of the happiest times of my life!

Ugh, that's what I'm afraid of. Been there, done that, went into field sales to get away from it. Now need to get away from dealing with the public and unhappy customers all the time.
