We would elect autistic candidates for president and institute special privileges for autistics.

I am not fond of voting or supporting a political canidate just because they share a feature I have such as being autistic, being female, being the same race. I also don't like the idea of special privileges for one group over everyone else, what makes us more deserving of these special privileges than people without autism exactly?

There are a lot of problems with that idea.

That party would only represent 1%-2% of the voters tops, which won't get it very far.

I wouldn't want an autistic president. I for one would make a terrible president because I can't organize my life let alone a nation, and I would probably make big social mistakes when doing diplomacy. Unless they have overcome all this stuff

If anything, there should just be an autistic special interest group. Any autistic political party wouldn't do well.

Yes. One or more "autistic lobbies" . An autistic NRA(that can get both the existing major parties to jump through hoops for it the way the NRA does) would be awesome. But not an autistic "political party".

If we were France, or some other mainland European country, where they have a hundred tiny splinter political parties then an "autistic party" that would form coalitions with other splinter parties might serve some purpose conceiveably, but not in an American (nor in a British either) context.

Ironically we already do have a pressure group that is almost like an "autistic NRA",but it seems to do autistic folks more harm than good, and that's "Autism Speaks".

I would rather not. A throne should't even exist to begin with...

Yes I think that's the flaw - we'd never get more than a couple of percent of the vote, and with the first-past-the-post system, that would probably amount to zero representation. Maybe a better move would be to align with the socialists, at least in the UK where we seem to have a left wing Labour party again at long last, as (IMO) genuine socialism is about fair play, compassion and caring for all. OTOH, these laudible values are usually betrayed as soon as the buggers get a taste of power. So maybe all we can do is redouble our efforts and use all means at our disposal to get society to treat the autistic community - and all underprivileged people - fairly. I just wish I could think of a good means.

A political party has to have some common ground. We are fractured over core issues. What causes autism? Is autism a curse, a burden, or a difference, a liitle of both?. What percentage of research money if any should go to finding a cure?. ABA an evidence based treatment to eliminate destructive behaviors, or a method to make autistics "indistinguable from their peers" turning its victims into depressed people too eager to please others?

Start whatever Party/PAC you want but I do NOT support "special privileges" for any group be that affirmative action for minorities or corporate welfare. Isn't it the utmost of discrimination to be thought that the bar should be lowered because people believe that your group, ethnic or otherwise, cannot compete without government assistance? In my view, no group should be considered any different than any other under the law.

Also, many of us claim to want autistics to be considered "different not defective" but at the same time say that we need entitlement programs. This is blatant hypocrisy and everyone knows it, you can't have it both ways. If you want to bake a cake and eat it too, working in a bakery (politics) isn't for you.

Veteans and senoirs recieve numourous entitlements not because members of said group are neccessarly impaired themselves or because people think being a member of said groups automatically makes them disadvantaged. They recieve these entilmenents largely without controversy because society mostly agrees it is payback for a productive life and enough members of the group will be impaired enough to need it, The country is split about whether blacks should be receiving entitlements. At times they have been cut but there is no real indication they will be completly eliminated any time in the near future. For Autistics how much entitlements we recieve or not recieve will not change the basic resentment and discomfort most people feel about us although it might change the degree of resentment. The degree of resentment will be partially determined by marketing. Having Al Sharpton as the default black spokesperson has not been a good thing for public perception of black people.

Those benefits for seniors and vets did not happen automatically they have and had powerful lobbying groups and while not agreeing on everything even the most stalwart tea partiers do not want to eliminate all benefits for seniors and vets. But many autistics deeply resent the lobbying group we do have and wish it gone.

Autistics are deeply split about the nature of autism but there is strong agreement that bieng autistic puts one at a disadvantage. Despite the wishes of some people America is not going to become a true capitalist sink or swim country in the forseeable future. People are going get benefits they do not need or deserve by legal and non legal means. Yet some argue that autistics despite bieng disadvantaged should get no benefits at all because it makes us look bad, it is us and us virtually alone that should just sink or swim. That will make them respect us SMH.

I am not against any benefits/accommodations for autistics....but I am against 'special privileges, like autistics being given more rights than the average person. I am not against things like a social safety network or reasonable accommodations though.

Not from you but I have read more then one Autistic argue that we should get no benefits and treated exactly like "normal" people. Of course what is an accommodation to one person is a underserved special privilage to another person.

Yes I have heard that to, I dismiss it as Social Darwinism B.S I just wasn't quite sure I was clear enough in my post that I distinguish special privileges from, necessary programs/accommodations to help disadvantaged people.
