Hi! My therapist has told me I should start swimming a couple of hours a week in order to spend my energy and reduce my meltdowns, as well as to fall asleep quicker.
My question is, those of you who swim or used to swim: If I have an hour to spend in the swimming pool, how can I combine the lengths/laps? For example, butterfly stroke, crawl stroke, backstroke... What do people who swim normally do?

Whenever it's been convenient, i.e. there has been a swimming pool on the way to work and I work regular hours, I have always gone for a swim every day before work, for half an hour. This always made such a difference to my mood, health, energy etc. I would do mostly breaststroke with some backstroke lengths when I got bored. I don't like any other styles of swimming.

I haven't been able to do this for a while because there isn't a pool near me or work. It sucks. I love being in water. I don't have a bath here either, I actually think about moving out of the area because of these things haha.

It really just depends on your goals and needs.

I'm trying to practice to get good at 50m freestyle, basically swimming as fast as possible from one end of a standard swimming pool to another.

I also have my own strength training program outside of swimming which has given me a body to help me perform better in the water (extra strength but still having a lean and thin physique).

I also may practice freestyle laps to help with endurance and stamina.

Otherwise I like quick bursts of speed and timing myself in the 50m dash.

For anyone/general I would just suggest swimming laps at your own pace, practicing a variety of swimming styles. Also try to improve diving into the water and changing directions quickly and immediately when reaching another end of the pool, and working on form/technique.

Have fun, it's an amazing sport to do!

Your part of a swim team aren't you? although standard (not Olympic size) pools here in the US are either 25 yards or 25m haven't been on a swim team since i was 11 so i forgot the exact measurement. but in any case to answer the OP's question, i find the easiest way to burn energy fast is doing the butterfly, but it depends on your build. Butterfly takes more stomach muscle than most think it would in order to get the most out of it. though personally i've always felt more at home when swimming or in the water than i have on land, even in my actual home or bed. swimmin has always come easy for me, like i was born for it.

No, I'm not part of a swim team. I just plan on going to the swimming pool maybe twice a week to spend energy and feel relaxed.
I see some of you like the butterfly. It's been many years since the last time I practiced it, so it'll be hard at the beginning, but it'll be worth it. Thanks!!

I swim competitively and practice is an hour long (drop-in lane swimming is right after so I typically stay an extra half an hour though) but I can typically get all of the strokes in and more. 100m (4 laps in 25m) of every stroke.
