I am trying to move out of my parents' home next summer. As of the date of me making this post, it is nearly one year until next summer. However, I may or may not need to postpone my move until the fall or maybe even a little later due to possible financial difficulties.

My question is, how much in advance do I need to start seeking out my new roommate before I actually pack my things and leave? I'm very antsy about who I'll be living with, so I want to start soon so I can be prepared. Is it too soon?

I've never been on my own and I'm really nervous; thanks for your input.

While I don't think there's any harm in starting to look now, I'd probably suggest waiting until it's about 4 months ahead of when you plan to move. Based on my own experience with roommates, I suspect that that's the earliest most of your potential roommates would be looking.

Look for a roommate as soon as you decide you're going to move out. That's what most people do, so if you wait until later many of the people who are planning to move out when you are might have already found roommates. More importantly, that'll give you more chances to coordinate with the other person and make sure you'll be compatible. There's no such thing as too soon.
