Why did we stop inventing gods?
The ancients were quite good at inventing new gods. The bible shows that the Jews invented many gods before deciding that god could not be defined and settled for “I am“, as the greatest expression of god. “I am” as spoken as a man.

Jews, in their oral tradition, gave man the last word in what god and his policies were to be. They accepted that the man they chose as head Rabbi of their Divine council had the power to overrule their written tradition. Man’s words, not an imaginary god, had the final say on policy. Man was supreme and not one of the imaginary gods.
Christianity then changed much of the morals and policies of their newly invented god, Yahweh, and also transferred the power of god to a man. Jesus. Jesus was now placed at the power seat at the right hand of his newly invented god and placed Yahweh in the right hemisphere of the brain, as shown in the art of the day as depicted by Michelangelo in his creation painting in the Vatican.
Islam then invented Allah, and so far, rightfully named him the last god to be invented. Foolish but true to date.
I see that search for a god as a search for the best laws and rules to live life by. After all, we cannot follow an imaginary god and can only follow the laws and rules that those imaginary gods has spoken, recognizing of course, that only a person can speak those laws and rules and that it was really a wise person who was uttering those words.
Gnostic Christians always saw those invented gods, specifically Yahweh, Jesus and Allah, as immoral and not worthy of us and that is why they named those gods as immoral and vile demiurges. This is not to say that those demiurges did not have some good policies but only says that a better god could and should be invented. Gnostic Christianity lost the god wars and was decimated the moment Christianity gained political power which they used to end freedom of religion.
Are immoral demiurges like Yahweh, Jesus and Allah, the best that mankind can come up with?
Why do you think we stopped inventing gods and settled for demonstrably immoral ones?

DL
P.S. Gods are the opium of the people.

I don't think we have, necessarily.
I think someone wrote stories about a God and, a very long time later, those stories had been passed on and accepted as truth. People would not have immediately believed them.
There's no way we can be sure that anything written today would not have passed down through the generations and eventually thought to be true, were it not for improved technology.
With us being in the age of information, it's easy for people to look back and see what's true and what's not. Everything is recorded now, so it will be quite clear to anyone looking back that Harry Potter isn't a true story. The cover illustration would give it away, even! If Harry Potter had been handwritten on scraps of paper, in a world where information did not pass quickly from one place to another, and had been passed down through generations, who's to say that eventually there would not be people searching for the ancient land of Hogwarts and evidence of Voldemort's existence?
Wow... According to Google, the OP only posted the same topic on 4 different websites this time...

Tell me, GnosticBishop... ... Throwing the same topic around on many different websites and forums (regardless of type, apparently) hoping for a reply.... Isn't that the textbook definition of trolling?
Maybe he is doing some research how people in different environments answer this? Can't rule out the possibility.
Anyway. People don't invent Gods anymore because they already have strong belief forced on them when they were kids. And the belief also says there is no other God and stuff.
We also have science explaining a lot of phenomens that needed supernatural explanation before.
However everyone is still free to invent a God if he wants to.
Even I discovered a few, while looking for my truth (I still don't know the truth but I don't care anymore).
- I am the only God. The whole world is just a dream and everyone else is just creations of my imagination, AI thought forms, nothing more.
- There is many Gods, everyone watching over one universe. Our God decided to not bother taking care of us or interfere.
And a few others I don't remember now.
there is also Flying Spaghetti Monster - a God invented not so long ago.
From 3000 BC to 800 AD they were winnowing down the number of gods from many hundreds down to one.
From 800 AD on the argument was about how you conceptualize that same one god.It made no sense to concoct additional "new gods". Then in the last couple of centuries it became a debate over whether there is one god, or zero gods.
So inventing "new" gods has been a rather meaningless endeavor for the last 12 centuries.
Because Western Man became empirical in outlook. Some lived a rough life, with their "prayers" not being answered. They also hated the communal aspects of religion, including that which features excluding others based upon superficial characteristics.
The wondered: If there was a god, why isn't He/She/It revealing him/her self? Why are my prayers not being answered. The possible conclusion, at least for some people, is that that is no "god/God" at all.
This line of thinking spread, in various forms, starting in earnest in the 18th century.

It's not trolling. It's just having the same discussion in different communities. I don't think there's a rule against re-posting your own post on other forums. The definition of trolling requires that you're deliberately trying to upset people and cause trouble which I don't think he necessarily is.
Early god were probably created to explain things that people didn't understand. There were probably other reasons too but I think that as science started to develop from ancient Greece onwards when people started think up natural explanations for natural phenomena, the use of gods and myth to explain them appeared less necessary.
Religions have to compete with each other, and right now most of the world is dominated by a handful of belief systems.
Religions tend to rise and fall with empires. Successful new religions tend to arise through force. Despite it all, we are now living in the most stable period in history and there is less incentive to overthrow the government, so any Scientologist or Mormon who decided to violently overthrow society would struggle to attract enough followers.
A Daesh-like cult is the only chance of a new god ever rising above the fringe.
Because we discovered the real one.
I wouldn't say paganism/polytheism is dead, though. With the big pagan revival in the early 20th century (Thelema, Wicca, etc.) and the popularity of writers such as Neil Gaiman and Grant Morrison, paganism is trendier now than it has been in the last thousand years.
Why did we stop inventing gods?
Media/TV providing a constant distraction from 'thinking for oneself'. And, for many, acting as the moral compass - which religion once provided (i.e. principles on how to live etc).
The 'God of the West' is now product consumption.
Almost everyone on this forum will likely be addicted to the news (try one month without it).
Media influence can easily be seen in this section of the forum with the recent prevalence of threads regarding race.
Which is ironic, given most like to believe they think for themselves.
