Hello everybody!

I'm not much of a one for introductions and was initially thinking I'd just slip in unnoticed, but having seen how many new members post introduction threads I have decided to say hello properly.

I'm female, in my mid 30s, and live in London, UK.

I don't have an official diagnosis, but have been told by 2 medical professionals that I have AS and should get a referral for assessment and official diagnosis, but I don't see much point - I've managed to get by (after a fashion) without one up until now and it wouldn't change anything. Following my unofficial diagnosis I did a lot of reading about it (to the point where it became an obsession) and there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

Although the knowledge about AS that I have acquired has explained a lot about my life so far, it is something that I have been struggling to come to terms with, although I am starting to feel more comfortable about the whole thing.

My interests and obsessions tend to change every few months, but my long-term ones are birds, science, and ancient history.

I live with my boyfriend who finds many of my quirks endearing (especially my ability to work out what is wrong with his computer and fix it ) and is very tolerant, so I am lucky in that respect.

Its amazing how much tolerance being able to fix peoples computers gets you...

I find this intriguing. How many AS and HFA
people have this knack. I never learned from
books. I only used them if I am COMPLETELY
baffled.

I find I have this knack too. I, for example,
look at software or parts and somehow
go autopilot and work out the bugs and
somehow develop a good understanding
for the repair or sofware.

The best part is trial and error. For example,
When I was a kid around 10 their was School
House Rock. It was a childs Saturday morning
short cartoon series built on education.

One of my favorite that applies to computer
and software evaluation is Mr.Woodsy Owl
and this kid. He goes to the woodsy owl
and say's "how many licks does it get to
get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?".

I apply this by "how many continuous
something before I burn out a CD-ROM
(done that one and it took 4 weeks of
continuous play, 12 hours x 28 days),
and don't ask about my hard drive
disasters in seeing "how many
licks it takes to get into the center of a
tootsie roll pop".

My employer knows that when the fax
machine is unhappy, it likes me and
let's itself be fixed without a manual.

Some of my experiments are deadlier
than others. For example, if you take
the suit case in OS7.1-9.2.1 for
machintosh from it's system folder
and drag it to the desktop you can
trash the whole system folder and
drag the system suitcase into the
trash because it is 'INSTANT DEATH'
OR A SWIFT BINK! and that's all
she wrote. Try finding that in a
PG13 macintosh book.

Ghosthunter - I like what you wrote. It is something that intrigues me, because I've never been taught how to do things with computers. I'm not a programmer or a computer technician by any stretch of the imagination.

I used to have a full time job in an office that didn't have desktop computers when I started there (big mainframe and terminals only), and I remember the day our first desktop PC was delivered to the office. I didn't have one at home, but within the first week I was the one who people came to when they had problems using it, or it wasn't doing what they wanted it to. The first time I ever saw the innards of a PC was when I decided to build one myself from scratch. It took me a while (and a lot of swearing!) to get it all working properly, but I got there in the end.

I do wonder about it - I know a couple of Aspies who are computer programmers/technicians, but another who hates/fears computers so much that he won't even try to use one, so it is by no means universal. I suspect that it is more to do with dogged persistence than anything else!

Heh, I remember pulling apart my first computer. It'd just broken down, and we were transferring parts from the old one into a new second-hand computer. We had a lot of things on the hard drive we wanted to save, but my sister and I were pulling it apart and having no idea what was what. We got the hard drive, and pulled it apart, exclaiming about how shiny the disc inside was. Too late did we realize what the shiny thing was.

for the record I have no interest/ability/aptitude whatsoever for computers, which I'm quite proud of truth be told

This is the Speckeldy.

We used to own about 30 chickens. My mother was breeding hens to lay green eggs. Rhode Island Red's crossed with Araucanas lay green eggs. We'd hardboil them and take them as food to social outings. Good conversation starter, eh.

I have absolutly no computer programming skills, but I learned how to master AutoCAD in about 3 weeks. At the end of that 3 weeks I was better than the instructor, who had worked for years and years in the industry (airplanes) and he couldn't teach me anything else. If I have a manual, I can teach myself how to use almost any program in a week.

I like all birds, but parrots, owls, ducks and penguins are my favourites. I would like to keep hens one day but would need somewhere with a garden or some land first, and given my current financial status, I can't ever see it happening! Thank you for the pictures posted, all birds are interesting to me.
