What are your opinions on the people who don't want to work and think society owes them a living?
I far more often encounter people who want to work but have difficulty obtaining or holding a job, either due to ASD or health problems.
I think society should stop being so paranoid about the idea that some rare lazy person with nothing wrong with them, might get something for nothing, and focus more on addressing the issues that keep those with ASD and other disabilities out of the work force or chronically under employed.
Among these obstacles are...
1. In the US, employers can legally not hire someone who does not have their own transportation. As many people with disabilities don't drive, these jobs are out of reach for them.
2. Most employers will put up with someone who comes in to work 98% of the time, but not someone who only shows up 90% of the time, but many disabilities reduce a person's reliability to 90% or less.
3. Social skills. I once applied for a job at a local company here. When the hiring manager asked "What brings you to (name of company)?" I responded "I need a job." I did not understand at the time that what he intended to mean was "Why are you interested in working at our company?" Needless to say I was not hired.
4. People with disabilities who need accommodations have to often compete with non-disabled people, with the same skill sets, who do not require accommodations. Why would an employer hire a disabled individual who needs accommodations, all else being equal? That is the question the disabled person has to answer, and sometimes there is no answer.
