Hans Asperger is the name of the guy who "discovered" Asperger's Syndrome.

Tony Attwood tends to describe Asperger's Syndrome quite well.

Asperger's is a form of (mostly) high-functioning autism where verbal abilities are often "above average," and visual spatial abilities "below average" (per IQ tests).

Within "classic autism," it is often stated that there is a lack of desire to socialize.

Within Asperger's, on the other hand, there is the desire to socialize and make friends---but the attempts to socialize and make friends sometimes comes off awkwardly.

Why do you not like the word?

I hate that word. I flinch when people say it out loud. I wish the tosser that discovered it had a better name, not something that has a different pronounciation in every accent.

I think it's an obscure and or misunderstood term to many.
I think I would rather say high functioning autism or mild autism, if I had Asperger's.
I'm glad in my case what I have is just called autism.

It is an awkward word/name. When pronounced the correct way with the hard G, it sounds like ass-burgers as per South Park.

And almost as awkward, many people in the UK say it with a soft G, "Asperjers." Which makes you feel kind of weird for saying it actually the right way, to them, anyway. You get a lot of people saying it both ways over here and there's something about that which really irks me.

I prefer "mild autism" or HFA but a lot of people in the UK have only just gotten used to "Asperger's" and feel more clear on what that is now, even though it's now passing out of diagnostic use --- aaaghhh.

It could have been worse. Hans' surname could have been "Wiener."

When you do something well, and someone doesn't like you, they'll always find a way to make it look like a flaw. Most people are really good at this practice compared with us autistics and will usually sway everyone's opinion against you, thus making your flaw real for all social, practical purposes, even if the same trait would be regarded as a virtue in someone else. The pursuit and defense of status trumps logical consistency every time.

Yeah I hate the word too, especially the (correct) pronunciation with the hard G. So I just say autism, or more specifically high-function autism. My official diagnosis was aspergers, but I was told I could say high functioning or asperger's interchangeably as I saw fit.

So if you dont like the word asperger(s), then just use "autism" or "high-functioning autism".
