I find that utterly repulsive to call anyone that slur.

My mother still calls people mongoloids.
In her generation, this was perfectly acceptable language.
It wasn't used as an insult, just a description.
She hasn't caught up on political correctness yet.
She still calls me deaf and dumb, although I'm technically neither.

I know it's your mother, but is my mother called me that, I'd hit her with a clue-by-four.

^ sounds bad.
Probably is bad.
I guess I'm used to it.
I don't expect her to ever change.

On the one hand, good for her for not worrying about political "correctness."

On the other hand, calling someone dumb or stupid is a harsh insult no matter the context of the situation. My dad does that too and there's no way of watering that down. He claims he's joking, but even so, I don't take it that way and I make it clear.

You're not just technically neither. If you can hear, then you're not deaf. If you can speak, then you're not 'dumb.'

fwiw deaf and dumb is an archaic way as saying someone is a deaf and unable to speak not stupid like one might immediately assume

^ yes, that's correct.
That's the context my mother used.
Not that I was stupid.
Although she called me stupid enough times too.

Mothers.
Gotta love 'em.

A mongoloid is an archaic way to describe someone with Down syndrome.

Mon·gol·oid
of or relating to the broad division of humankind including the indigenous peoples of eastern Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Arctic region of North America.

I believe I have missed something...

I find any disability related slur to be offensive. That one is on the top of the list, because I have a friend who has Down Syndrome. I'm surprised that people still use that particular slur these days.

I know what you mean, there are some disability slurs that are horrible.
another one is deaf and dumb, a lot of deaf people find that offensive and will say they know a few dumb hearing people.
