Is this you?

Quote:
Many individuals with AS can adopt strategies for coping and do lead fulfilling lives - being gainfully employed, having successful relationships, and having families. In most cases, they are aware of their differences and can recognize if they need any support to maintain an independent life

Quote:
Children with AS can learn to manage their differences, but they may continue to find social situations and personal relationships challenging. Adults with AS are able to work successfully in mainstream jobs and live an independent life

Quote:
On the other hand, many adults with AS do get married, get graduate degrees, become wealthy, and hold jobs. The intense focus and tendency to work things out logically often grants those people with AS a high level of ability in their field of interest. When these special interests coincide with a materially or socially useful task, the person with AS often can lead a profitable career and a fulfilled life. The child obsessed with naval architecture may grow up to be an accomplished shipwright.

The bit about coping strategies and being aware of differences applies to me. But I've never had a relationship or a job.

It's pretty much me, but it's not everybody. It's not even everyone with AS in my family.

This statement definitely needs to be qualified:

Quote:
Adults with AS are able to work successfully in mainstream jobs and live an independent life

Some are, some aren't. Technically, if your aspie tendencies don't interfere in pretty big ways with at least some aspect(s) of your life, you can't be diagnosed. So it would be a lot more realistic to say that all aspies have problem areas, and their attempts to overcome those problems meet with varying degrees of success.

Certainly.

I don't doubt that AS can be severe to the point where it isn't possible to live a full normal life but I believe that most would be able to live fantastic lives if the situation were right. Unfortunatly the opportunity doesn't always present itself and the very nature of AS makes it hard for aspies to create those opportunities on there own.

Well, I'm lacking in the relationship department but working on it and hope to get there..

Career wise, I've have just finally started using my special interests to build successful businesses. Only time will tell how it will work out as they are in the start up phase, but I am driven and optomistic and can visualize my path to success.

So pretty much me. :)

I try to be like that. I have a job, but I can't say I'm being very successful at it. I try to cope, but it's hard. Getting married: no propects. Becoming wealthy: I ain't counting on it.

Still, the part about social difficulties, I relate to that part.

Is that me? Sort of. I have a decent job, I own my own home, I have friends that I hang out with from time to time (my weekend RPG gaming group being most of them). But I am hardly wealthy, nor do I have a "relationship".

No.

I don't care either...it's not whom I am; I find it absolutely hilarious that these things are listed as a "pick me up", I know it's not directed to those with "classical" autism like me, but it still makes me laugh.

Pretty much me. Qualifications: I own my own business, it is profitable but barely, I have not starved yet. I am asexual so no relations.

I am like polonium in that I have a half life.

Sounds like me.
I don't plan on having a family of my own, though.

yes, that could be me. I didn't know I was AS so I didn't have anything stop me.
I just thought I was dumb or something.

Me too! When I was diagnosed, I went through a stage of being really angry with the world in general - why didn't anyone work this out earlier?! All these years I've wasted beating myself for being crap at things I'm neuologically designed to be crap at! Now though, I'm kind of glad I didn't find out until I was an adult - I think I've aimed higher than I would have otherwise.
