My new video is about how occupational therapy can help adults with autism or mental illness. It is based on research I have done and my own experience with six months of occupational therapy. It helped immensely!

Glad it works for you.

I find, though, that most OTs don't have much to offer and don't know how to interact with people on the Autism Spectrum. I see them acting in a superior, paternalistic manner, and coming from a medical model of needing to cure their clients. Usually offering very vague, subjective outcomes.

I know there's also some kind of therapy which can help people with visual processing problems. Man, I would love to be able to do that, but it would be too expensive.

Whenever my son was assessed by an OT, they'd say he wasn't in need of any help. He was referred for OT evals at 2 1/2 and 4 by other professionals that believed he needed some kind of OT. Then the OT would say, "I can't do anything for him."

Hi, LauraPaxton:

I noticed that there were some people who doubted the value of
occupational therapy for Autism Spectrum Disorders; on the other
hand, their remarks were in an American context (certainly) and
away from a university-teaching hospital setting (probably). I live and work
in Canada, and the working methods of occupational therapy here may
be very different from those in the United States. I've been
doing voluntary/paid work in an occupational therapy-related environment,
however, and that again may be very different from the occupational
therapy you get in a conventional hospital. In other words, hmmmmm....

I agree. I am dealing with some here in Alberta as well. Very helpful. More of a focus on finding something that fits you than meaningless advice.
