Religion codifies cultural norms far more than it creates them. Religion works backwards from outcomes to explanations.

It's interesting, though. Most atheists live fairly conventional lives.

A surprising number of priests lose their faith during seminary. Studying the bible often results in collapse of the belief system. Obviously, to keep the job, and not be a huge hypocrite, they justify their continued deception in some way. I suppose that for some, it's no different from slinging booze or being a choir director; just another service industry job.

Iconoclasts like me find niche religions which suit us (mine has no major demands on the unscientific beliefs front). I'd wager that a higher percentage of fringe Xians than of atheists have unconventional social practices.

That's the whole point of atheism. It's suppose to a non belief system. That's the whole point of it. At least too me that's what it is. You don't believe in anything religious. You don't think there is god. Which I'm an atheist and I assume you are as well since you're the one that made this thread.

Ok so you establish that you don't believe in religion your a Atheist . To me science is the obvious void filler unless your going for nihilism . A meaning for life then continuation of your species seems to be popular with other lifeforms .Some Atheists use terms like intellectually robust to describe Atheists .You've got to digest that when die on any real scale it simply doesn't matter . My point if your oh I don't believe in that silly nonsense wouldn't it make sense to have another belief system developed .

I don't think we atheists need something like a religion. I think family is an important thing to some atheists. All the standard stuff.

If the only common denominator is not believing in deities, then that isn't actually a system at all, is it? So it's a non-belief non-system. So if this is the old accusation of atheistic dogmatism you're barking around, you've kind of already shot yourself in the foot.

Atheism merely means the non-belief in any sort of Supreme Being.

There are atheists, though, who create a belief system out of their rationalist notions, and decry those who don't adhere to these notions. In essence, atheism, paradoxically, becomes a religion, similar to how Marxism can be said to have many parallels with religious belief.

There are fundamentalist atheists. I.E. Real atheists don't believe in ghosts.

Real skeptics don't. Ghosts aren't gods, and hence aren't covered under the "theism" in atheism. Same for astrology, homeopathy, phrenology and any number of other non-divine flavours of BS.

Real skeptics neither believe nor disbelieve anything without evidence.

For clarification, firm disbelief is a belief.

Firm disbelief is not how all atheists feel.
