Assuming that there were real social problems, which affected everyone, equally, they would have no intention of remaining, as that is not in the essential nature of migrants. The wall is not to keep people out.

Of course the wall is meant to keep people out! Trump repeated what uneducated people were thinking - that wages were low, benefits were being cut, and jobs were disappearing because Mexico was purposely sending their criminal class to America, who then stole all the jobs by working for less. Why else would Trump want to make Mexico pay for the wall, if it wasn't a punitive measure? Trump knew where people's prejudices and misinformed opinions lay, and he exploited it by repeating those said prejudices and misinformed ideas.
