E521 and 7900GS

Can the standard Dell E521 PSU have enough juice to power a 7900GS,especially when overclocked.

Many times the power supplies are made just good enough to meet the maximum configurable specs on a computer. If the highest energy consuming cards configurable for that computer are much less than your card, then it might not.

The power supply is listed as 305 watts. This looks like a budget computer that isn't made for upgrading much.

Computers that you buy from places like that usually are not high quality power supplies, so even it you get it to work it may cause the system to be unstable(crashing, locking up, etc).

EDIT: If the power supply fries, it has a chance of damaging the rest of the computer along with it.

another EDIT: If the computers' power supply is not standard then it might not be possible to upgrade it.

The Dell won't power that card. I think I would rather try and get a 8 series graphics card than a 7 series.

Yea Dells are not good for upgrading most of them you can't fit a normal sized PSU inside it. If you can your lucky other wise Unless you could make some kinda custom case that can also keep the computer warm while you have a new PSU and Graphics card you are going to have to stick with what you have.

If you can fit a standard PSU into your computer then make sure you also have a extractor fan since the next graphics card will produce more heat that will need to be explied from the case.

I don't want dx 10 or a card that needs TONS of juice like the 8800's will.

The minimum i can go is a 7600GT,will the dell provide enough power for a overclocked 7600GT?

I talked with one of Dell's goonpeople through the online chat, they said that the E521 does accept a standard ATX power supply. I don't know how far you should trust them though.

Okay but if not then will a 8600GT OCed be good for:

Medieval 2 Total War
Supreme Commander
Age of Empires 3

At 1024x768,but if the standard PSU can power a 7900GS OCed to 600/800MHz maybe 1280x1024,I know its overkill for most of my other games.

The only one I would worry about not working is Supreme Commander, though I bet even the integrated GPU for the Dell could power that, and the 256 MB card that comes with it would be more than enough.

The response time of the e157fp is just barely less than 1/60 so it should be okay assuming the input lag isn't too high. Your CRT is faster though. Whether or not you get the LCD depends on how long you have had the CRT, if you suspect it may fail in the near future then you should get the LCD, otherwise it would probably be a waste of money.

LCDs tend to be too dark unless they are top end LCDs, that is also worth taking into account (I doubt the dell LCD is top end).

I should have come to this board 3 weeks ago :D

I bought supreme commander 3 weeks ago which would not work on my NVIDIA 440
(Excellent detective work there)

What is the minimum level of Geforce graphics card that will work at a playable level?

I have a Gigabyte Computer (note, just a name) with 2.4 Gigahertz, 1Gig of Ram...

Anyway, I like the NVIDIA 6200 so far

1.Looks like i'm gonna have to go with the 8600GT.

2.To the above poster: If you don't want all the eye candy,then the 6200's are fine,but do you have a dual core processor because sup com needs dual core to get good frames.

But if you want the eye candy at 1280x1024 or 1600x1200,get the 8800GTS 320MB and OC the hell outta it.
