That’s why there’s no particular pressure to commence with a Season 2 of Discovery, and as mentioned above, Season 2 currently does not have a green light. CBS will be quite happily tooling up their replay sales over the next two years just based on what they already have. Even if they do greenlight the next season, we won’t see any of it until at very least the first quarter of 2019, and probably not till the second quarter, assuming it happens at all. The longer we wait to hear, of course, the worse the odds. These things have a certain momentum, and if they wait too long, the moment will be lost, and they’ll move on to the next shiny object."

No s**t Sherlock. These franchises wouldn't exist if someone couldn't make money on them. Its a job like anything else.
I think the previous posters are missing the point: the new Star Trek is going to be a one and done regardless of how good/bad it is. It was never about the Star Trek franchise, they just happened to own the rights, it's merely a negotiating chip for other products in their lineup. Point being, it's not that they're making a profit, it's that they're exploiting Trekkies and they're most likely going to leave them high and dry after a single season once they've established their negotiating chip. This is different than making a product the consumer likes and merely profiting from it-- that promotes growth of the product, this is just a business decision to temporarily boost interest in their service (CBS All Access) so they can charge more to other distributors for other content and once that's established they don't give two craps whether you liked it or not.
Frakes is involved in directing this. I saw him in person at a ST con this month. And he said this is going to be a good production. That allayed some of my fears.

That's great, CBS doesn't care. Read the article.
I haven't watched because I'm not going to pay for it, but the marketing for STD (did no one seriously bring that acronym up to whoever thought that was a good name for the show?
) has been appalling. "Look at our diverse cast!" Uh, yeah, Star Trek has always had diverse casts. "Look at our strong female characters!" Star Trek has always had strong female characters. "Diverse cast" and "strong female" is pretty much all I took away from the marketing campaign, other than the ship is ugly, the Klingons didn't need another makeover, and yet another prequel is hardly what the fans were asking for.
I might give the show a shot when the season is over on a free trial, but mostly because I like Michelle Yeoh.
