In a new study scientists have revealed that people with autism do not daydream.

The resting period usually gives time for areas of the brain to process emotional and reflective thoughts.

The University of California research, in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, compared brain scans of people with autism and those without.

The scientists said the typical social awkwardness seen in autism may be due to this failure of this "daydreaming" brain network.

This study sheds further light on the neurological factors involved in autism says Richard Mills, National Autistic Society

Several regions of the brain are highly active during these periods - including the medial prefrontal cortex, the rostral anterior cingulate and the precuneus.

This activity is suppressed when the brain is doing something which demands understanding, or another intellectual process.

It was found that the activity during rest periods seen in people who did not have autism was absent in those with the condition.

Richard Mills, director of research for the National Autistic Society and Research Autism, said: "The causes of autism are varied, complex and not yet fully understood.

"This study sheds further light on the neurological factors involved in autism and some of the possible implications for differences in the cognitive profile and social behaviour.

"Such findings will add to our understanding of this spectrum of conditions and it is hoped may also be utilised in the development of effective treatments and other approaches."

I have inatentive ADHD and I daydream pretty much none stop and hate anything or
anyone to bother me when I'm zoned out.

Also there is a reason why LFA and HFA or aspergers differ. So this study likley does not
apply to the entire autism spectrum.

I find myself daydreaming a bit of how I want my life to be.

There was another thread where we discussed daydreaming a couple of months ago, but I can't find it now. I asked in it, what defines a daydream? Because if you define daydreaming as imagining yourself doing things, or things happening with other people, or just plain imagining stuff, I don't do that. Other people talk about it, and I see it on TV, but I never do it.

When my mind wanders I think about things like, why is the paint flawed on the wall right here? What's that small black dot over there? What's the difference between "practice" and "practise"? And if I get really bored, I find something to read- even if it's a clothing tag- and fidget and poke at things. I stim to keep myself busy. I listen to sounds.

My husband says he daydreams about people. He tells me I should think more about my interactions with people and try to predict what people will think if I say something to them. He says he plays out interactions in his head before they happen, and he imagines people who have made him mad getting their due. I don't ever do that.

I think there's a difference between thinking or pondering things and daydreaming.

That's kind of what I was wondering as I read the above. I mean, by my understanding of the verb "to daydream", the aspies I know do this far more than NTs.

I try not to daydream too much, but generally I do a bit of it anyhow. Not anything too fantastic, but playing out conversations I might have or wondering what it would be like if xyz were to happen.

True, but didn't scientists also say that:

-Blacks are inferior as fighter pilots(1940s)
-AIDS is a homosexual-specific illness (1980s)
-Lead is a harmless substance (several thousand years, up until the 1970s)
-An extinct animal might not go extinct (celocanth, 1938)
-Agent Orange was harmless (1970s)

Take it with a grain of salt.

once, scientists claimed that dreaming while we sleep lasts only few seconds.
i was a child then and didn't believe them.
then they developed machines that could measure it better and discovered
that we actually dream most of the time in sleep.

Hey! I didn't know that! I also always felt like that "dreams last only a short while" claim was bunk. My dreams are often like very long movies.

I don't "daydream"..., I talk to my near-infinite variations of self.
