Although I do prefer to hear "Merry Christmas" (Happy Holidays is kind of tacky)... It doesn't offend me in the least if someone wishes me a Happy Holidays. The word " Holiday" derives from Holy-Day. So in an ironic twist, people that use the phrase Happy Holidays in an effort to stamp out Christian connotations, actually end up emphasizing it more. The only term I really detest around this time of year is "Season's Greetings". Its like you're not even trying with that one.

If I know the person is Christian I say "Merry Christmas"

If I know the person is Jewish during Hanukkah I say "Happy Hanukkah"

If I know the person does not celebrate Christmas or as with this year the person is Jewish and Hanukkah is over I say "Enjoy your day off"

If I do not know the person's religion I say "Happy Holidays"

If somebody says "Merry Christmas " to me I say "Merry Christmas" back. Same with "Happy Holidays"

That is my story and I'm sticking with it. If that offends someone it is not my problem but their SJW problem.

With everything I've been reading here lately, I'm scared to say anything to anyone.

There’s always ”Festivus for the rest of us!”

As a Heathen I say Happy Christmas, though also there is a common expression: Have a good 'un. That's it.

The expression Winterval makes me ill, and Happy Holidays isn't far behind.

I used to work retail and I never shied away from saying Merry Christmas as that's what 99.99% of people around here celebrate anyways. Also, I never got reported for it, so who cares? I'm not interested in bending over backwards for the .01% as most of them probably aren't offended by hearing Merry Christmas anyways. Heck, it's somehow not ok to say Merry Christmas but it's ok for Christmas ads, banners and all things Christmas to be put up in the majority of public spaces. Hypocritical much?

It's one thing if I were to know someone who celebrates an alternate holiday as I'd have no problem saying Happy Hanukkah to them or whatever and that would be the polite thing to do. However, if I don't know someone I'll just say Merry Christmas. If anything as a Christian I should be offended by this push to further remove the Christ from Christmas. It's become too focused on the superfluous as it is IMHO. Besides, Christmas is just as much a secular holiday now anyways. Is it somehow offensive now that even atheists want to exchange gifts with one another and put a tree up in their house? Who's supposed to be offended by this? I believe in free speech first and foremost. If someone has a problem with something that's not intended to offend them, I don't think I'd want to know them anyways.

I've always said Merry Christmas, but I've never had a problem with others saying it or not. You could wish me a happy solstice, and it wouldn't bother me.

I've always said "happy holidays."

I intend it to mean, "Merry Christmas and a happy New Year."

Or whatever other holiday you celebrate. Don't care if it offends anyone.

Doesn't "holiday" come from "holy day" anyway?

Seconded.

Interesting fact: Hollywood, CA was originally called Holywood, and was a community geared toward morality and temperance. Then the motion picture industry took off and the rest is history.

Christmas lasts for 12 days and it ends January 5th. I keep saying Merry Christmas til then. Some people "get it" but after New Years, they do kind of look at you funny if you say Merry Christmas. In my neck of the woods most people celebrate the 12 days of Christmas, but they kind of slack off early because everyone has to go back to school/work.

There are people who for various reasons don't celebrate Halloween. Do those people get offended when people say to them "happy Halloween"?

Some might, as they've convinced themselves that it's a paganistic, Satanic day.
