I remember when I was little that the mall used to have a pet store & one of the animals they had for sale looked kind of like a baby alligator or crocodile. I doubt a pet store would sell one of those thou & I think I remember being told it was something else but not sure. They were kept in an aquarium with water & high gravel one one side so they could get out of it. Does anyone have a clue what animal this was?

Caiman? They're closely related to alligators and crocodiles, but are smaller. I have seen pet stores selling baby alligators before, though.

More than likely a caiman

Very popular pet amongst the reptile world back in the 90's/00's. A reptile shop in Sheffield (if still there) has a fully grown one in a tank at the back of the shop. He's a right beaut and time your visit to the shop right and you get to watch them feed him! I'd say he was a good 5-6ft long adult.

Thanx for the ideas guys :D I did a little research on these suggestions & it defiantly wasn't a crocodile skink because those are too small. I doubt it was a gvial since those can get pretty huge. I would guess what I saw was probably a caiman or possibly actually a baby alligator thou I cant imagine why anyone would keep an alligator as a pet unless the person was an evil villain or something who wanted them for his lair but he would steal em or catch em in the wild instead of actually buying em.

Perhaps this:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuvier%27s_dwarf_caiman

But 3.5 to 4.5 feet long is still way too big for me to want as a pet. Really the size of its mouth would be my biggest concern.

That could be it. The 1s I've seen must not of been fully grown thou. I actually wouldn't mind having one as a pet but I'm almost positive that won't ever happen due to living in apartment, lack of money & not having a clue where to find one. I kind of like the idea of a fierce pet for some reason & would kind of like a snapping turtle if i cant have the other. About the only pets we'll have anytime soon besides our cat would be another rodent & maybe a dog.

Get a big, scary dog (a German Sherpherd or Dobermann) or something smaller like a bull terrier. They're badass and fierce-looking but they can be trained easily and are very affectionate towards their owner. I keep snakes and I've kept other reptiles too, but they're not really "pets" or good companions. Dogs are a better investment.

Reptiles are often sold as babies. Like those cute little six inch iguanas that end up being huge.
