Question about the O.J. Simpson case, out of curiosity.

I was watching the documentary O.J.: Made in America, and Robert Shapiro talks about how they played the race card, in this interview, at 1:50, into the interview:

In the documentary, the rest of the Simpson's attorney team sees this interview on TV and they said they felt that Shapiro was being a complete hypocrite for saying they played the race card.

But I was wondering why is that, or why did they think it was hypocrisy exactly?
