Hmmm.... The other jobs I applied for are seasonal so I assumed the one I was interviewing in-person tomorrow was also. But looking over the job announcement in preparation of the interview, it says "part-time" but nothing about "seasonal". The other interview is for a full time 6 month position. Also it says "starts at 9.25/hr" so does it apply it could be a longer term job with pay raises? Or does that mean maybe based on experience they might pay you more than that to start? Too late to ask them before the interview, but if it is a longer job than just a seasonal would it be more worth it than the full time yet short job? I'm sure they would tell me these details more at the interview.

This job was posted on indeed.com where I originally found it and I just compaired it to the zoo job that I knew was seasonal. Indeed had the zoo job listed as "Part Time, Temporary" while the other one just said "Part Time"

So the two interviews tomorrow...

Full time and pays more but seasonal and I would have to move away from husband for six months

Vs.

Part time possibly permanent and I can live here, but pays less

Money doesn't mean everything...

the thing about the part time job is, it could turn into a full time job if you do it well. So that's definitely something to consider.

Some seasonal jobs can turn into permanent jobs too, but not if you're waiting to move back home.

As for what "starts at 9.25/hr" means. It probably means that they want to hire someone at that amount first, and then possibly progress via performance increases or promotions. It may mean that they'll pay more right off the bat, but my guess is that putting that price out front is a way to set expectations for starting salary.

If you're interacting with the hiring manager only and there isn't an HR/recruiting person involved then I'd say the best time to ask would be after they've said something that you believe that you are going to get the job, but before you actually accept the offer. Specifically mention what the ad said like you have here:

"it says "starts at 9.25/hr" [is this] a longer term job with pay raises? Or does that mean maybe based on experience [it] might pay more than that to start?"

What this does is turns it from a general "how much does this job pay, I am deciding if I want it based on what you're going to give me" and into "I wanted to verify something I read about this job".

Contrariwise, if there is an extra layer of HR/recruiter person working with you setting up the meetings and interviews for a hiring manager you could probably ask them more directly. "I noticed that the ad says the job starts at 9.25/hr, does this mean there is actually a pay range? how does that work?".

Anyway... you didn't ask for any of this advice and may not even need it, but when I read it I kinda thought maybe someone could use the info if they're reading along :)

This is a small non-profit organization, I am talking directly to who would be my supervisor if hired. I'm more interested to know if it will be seasonal vs. permanent than the pay details because I'm on disability meaning I can do part time work and get at least part of my benefits and not loose our Medicaid. The other job is Americorps... It would not effect my SSI either because of special rules.

I'm having family issues... My husband is super clingy and I had to tell him that I would prefer it if he wasn't sitting directly behind me listening in on my phone interview. Also I told my uncle 20 minutes before they were going to call me and in the middle of the interview he still came in the room and started doing stuff.

And for my in-person interview later today my husband insists on coming with me and waiting in the car until I am finished. He said in the past stuff like he wished I worked somewhere where he could be too, etc.... When I went by myself to the all day interview he acted like I wouldn't make it back alive without him and so did my uncle a little who originally wanted to drive me there. Excuse me, I'm 35 years old, been driving for years, no major accidents, guys please treat me like an adult!

I insisted my husband stay home and he did. I found out more about the position during the interview and it went well. They are hiring 2-3 people to work 10-20 hours a week on an irregular schedule and one person to work 20-30 hours a week on a more set schedule with additional responsibilities. I had a job in the past with very similar responsibilities so I have a good shot at the more hours position. They called the job "non-contractual" saying there is not a minimum or maximum amount of time to work for the company. They say some people stay for a year, others stay for much longer, etc...

The phone interview I had an irruption from my uncle and the phone call disconnected and I just didn't get a good feeling about it. Also something they mentioned in the job description I know I wouldn't be able to do it well. I hear back from them in two weeks. The other interview is as I said a lower paying but longer term job and nothing in the job description made me that nervous. They are hiring quick and I was promised a call as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday!

I'm hoping to take breaks from interviews for awhile, but which job sounds like a better deal?

Hi Angnix,

I think the lower paying one sounds like a more stable job if you can afford the lower pay and shorter hours. I dunno how much tolerance you have for risk though or what your financial situation is.

Also if SSI is a factor (which I think you mentioned somewhere in one of these threads), the lower pay could help keep that safer. Once you stop qualifying for SSI it can be hard to get back I think.

ANYTHING would improve my financial situation because I get SSI and my husband is still fighting for his and the hearing is long off. My caseworker recommended a part time job and the part time but more long term one makes more sense. On the highway it takes about 40 minutes to drive there and off the highway nearly an hour so if I got that one I might consider actually moving closer to the city or even in it.

From the stuff you said it seems like you have a preference, and I'd say based on what I know that I'd probably go for the same thing if I was you. :)
