I feel like I left a bit of myself behind somewhere.

There has been a lot to come to terms with these past 6 months. Autism mostly, the new way my family looks and operates. My past life coming screaming back up at me and needing to be re assessed and re evalutated in light of this new information.

But there is something out of sync. It feels like this new version of reality I live in and I have absorbed and accepted at lightening pace has yet not been impregnated into me as a whole.

I am falling down the stairs. I am breaking plates. I am trapping my hand in the door. I am crashing about.

I am out of sync with myself. There is some kind of discord in me.

Does this sound familiar to anyone. How do I realign myself? Jump out of a plane? drive real fast.... it feels something involving a lot of adrenalin would help.

A bit familiar. I’m surprised I still have all my fingers.

You should remember that autism doesn’t define you.

You don’t change suddenly based on a diagnosis. You don’t “become” autistic because of it.

True. I gratefully also have all my fingers but I am on my 6th concussion.

This is something to take very seriously. My daughter had frequent concussions and post concussive syndrome. Of course it will make you feel different, and not functioning very well!

She was fortunate to find a "brain damage" support group, for patients and caregivers dealing with stroke, tumors, concussions, or anything else that causes functioning problems with the brain. This is not a magical cure-all, but it can help you accept your limits better and possibly learn some techniques for coping better.

I think if you put together the non-standard neural wiring of an autistic brain, with insults/traumas like a concussion, you can absolutely expect a decline in functioning, and such experiences as depersonalization.

Be very kind to yourself as you work through this.

Thank you BeaArhur.

5 of my concussions happened before I was 15. I would have assumed I would have noticed any lasting impact by now but maybe not. The 6th was this past autumn in a freak accident when I ended up with a rather large tree branch over my head.

I have always had a rather odd mind-body thing going on. Like I am hyper aware of a lot of things with my body. For example, I gave birth twice with no pain relief and the first time I was able to get into a mind space where I felt no pain whatsoever.

It might sound really odd and new-age crazy but what I felt in writing this post is that my mind has absorbed a lot of new information and accepted a new state of things whilst my body is strangely lagging behind. I just feel a bit out of sync. Like information overload is tiring me out physically.

Absolutely!

Nowadays the recommendations for after a concussion are not even to go to school or do your usual mental work; it used to be, just no gym class until symptoms subside. But try and convince a teenager to stay in bed and not even watch TV or play video games!

We know so much more about brain injury than we used to. Only recently are we seeing CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) in football players, where numerous blows, possibly mild enough that they weren't called a concussion, have a cumulative effect over years.

Try and take the long view; as you learn some coping techniques you CAN be more effective but you just might have to accept that you will always be easily fatigued, have difficulty with stress, etc. It's so very important to have the best health possible, from adequate sleep to an excellent diet. Good luck.
