Hello,

I suspect that I have an Autism Spectrum Disorder and am looking for confirmation and an official diagnosis. Specifically, High Functioning Autism due to the speech delay as a child.

I am finding it difficult to locate a professional who works with autistic adults in the Midwest states. For those of you who have been diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder as an adult, where did you receive the diagnosis?

Thank you for any assistance provided.

Ryan

I had to drive 90 miles to a major city and I was fortunate that it was only that far and my brother lives down there for the time between appointments.

There doesn't appear to be much (using the site that shall not be named's resources locator) in Nebraska. Depending on where you are, there seem to be clusters of resources in Denver, Kansas City, Des Moines, or Sioux Falls.

You could also reach out to Autism Nebraska, who should be able to give you a list of clinicians who do adult diagnosis in the region.

In my case, I started with my GP, who talked to me for 10 minutes, said that I showed some signs of it like not making eye contact, and then gave me a phone number I could call to find a psychologist who deals with ASD for adults.

But I do know that if you don't live in a relatively big city, it will probably be hard to find a psychologist who deals with ASD for adults. You may have to travel.

I was able to get help from my state's disability office. It was a little difficult at first because my case worker wanted to know why I wanted to get tested when I looked fine, and communicated fairly normally. They also wanted to know what good it would do to get me evaluated at my age. I was 29 at the time, so I explained to them how I wanted to get accommodations at work and school; I also explained to them about my issues in attention, memory, learning and executive function. After talking with them about my issues I was set up for a neuropsychological evaluation, which was split into two five-hour sessions. I was able to get for it for free, because I didn't have much income, so you might still have to pay for it even if you get it through the state. You can get evaluated by finding a neuropsychologist in you local area. If you are in a major metro area, you might try contacting the local medical school if you have one nearby. Some medical schools have an autism clinic, where they will provide evaluations, I don't know about the cost though.

I was doing a search to help my sister deal with our strange, dying mother when I read about Asperger's. Suddenly, both our lives made sense. Professionals readily concur, and one put a label on my concurrent attachment disorder. That counsellor was covered under the Canadian medical plan, but I only found her when referred by victim services after an assault.
