I really enjoyed this film. And it was significant for more than just Hans backstory. It finally and totally puts to rest the question of does Disney view that prequels as cannon or will they just pretty much ignore them. The answer, without giving away anything, is that they absolutely do see them as official Star Wars and this is shown in a big and unquestionable way.
So to the prequel haters who were hoping Disney would cast them aside, no such luck. The prequels live. Period.
And I'll add this: If you have seen Season 3 of the Rebels cartoon, which is official Disney cannon, you knew this already.

Something else I would add: knowledge of the Disney Star Wars Universe beyond the films is actually needed to really understand this part. The Rebels cartoon in particluar. So casual SW viewers who only see the films may have a WTF moment on this score.

My family and I really enjoyed the movie. In particular, I liked how Han was an Imperial deserter and how he met Chewbacca. But especially, I liked how Han definitely shot first! And of course the unexpected identity of Red Dawn's leader.

Han was always an ex Imperial officer, even in the now non cannon novels. And Red Dawns leader is of course the proof that Disney is not discarding the prequels or remaking them or doing anything of that sort.

I really enjoyed Solo a lot. Story wise my favorite thing about it was how the Galactic Empire's role in it was actually quite small. I think this choice worked because it allowed for a greater appreciation and stronger connection to Han's story.
I didn't necessarily see Mr. Ehrenreich as Han Solo at first, but after a while I began to see it and I thought his performance was very well done. Donald Glover as Lando was a superb choice from the start.
That ending. ![]()

Yes. If you have seen the cartoons, it wouldnt be such a shock.

I might actually watch it. I normally don't have any interest in Disney, but I didn't know that George and Kasdan were actually behind it, and had the whole thing written before the Disney buyout.
From what I've seen, it seems very much like Disney threw the prequels in the bin. Heck, even with Eps IV-VI, it seems like they only put some of those characters into the new movies to appease the fans...then they promptly began killing them off so they could focus on mass marketing their own IP characters. They get more money that way
As for Solo, I don't know, maybe they were unable or unwilling to rewrite the script.
Sorry, I just woke up, still pretty groggy

Um, no. Watch the film and you will see. There is a prominent Prequel character in this film, giving it also strong ties to the cartoons, in which the Clone Wars and Prequels have a huge presence. And it gives the appearance that this character WILL be back for more. Disney has NOT chucked the prequels in the bin, quite the opposite.

I haven't seen any of the cartoons (except tiny bits of the one that wasn't very good). So that cameo will be lost on me =)
But just because it was in the script, and got filmed, doesn't mean that Disney will follow through with sequels (and they've stated that none of the side-story characters will intertwine with the "main canon" films). Especially if ticket sales aren't high enough. Remember when Disney were going to make all of the Hitchhiker's Guide and Chronicles of Narnia movies?? >_<
...or John Carter of Mars? =(
...or The Lone Ranger, or Prince of Persia, or...etc. etc.

Well yeah, but this guy didnt start as a "side story" character. And he now has a prominent role in the Rebels cartoon, which is all Disney and all cannon.
