"They stood guard until we found her and then they just left her like a gift and went back into the forest," Wondimu said, adding he did not know whether the lions were male or female.

i hate to ruin this nice story but why couldn't the policeman tell if the lions were male or female (male lions have manes, female lions don't)?
and if they were male lions then this story is ironic because male lions are selfish, lazy and barbaric!: male lions claim their female lion partners by force, often killing the female lion's baby lion-cubs first. then they force the female lion to do all the hunting as well as bringing up their offspring (this is very illogical because male lions are stronger than female lions and would be able to provide larger meals for themselves and their family but they prefer to use their strength to bully their partners in to doing it for them). as if this wasn't bad enough the male lion then takes the "lion's share" of the food that the female lion has just hunted for.
don't get me wrong, i do love animals (i'm a strict vegetarian) but males lions are at the bottom of my list, next to flies and spiders.
