Both John Wick movies took me by surprise. Here I thought I was going to watch a yawner of a Keanu Reeves film; instead, they were so chock full of shootings that they seemed like a video game come to life. I'm definitely looking forward to John Wick III.

I also wasn't expecting both John Wick films to be great action movies but they also took me by surprise given how much influence the directors put into both films with a pair of examples being Clint Eastwood's Dollars Trilogy and Chan Wook-Park's Vengeance films.
