One job I applied to state the benefits and salary right in the job announcement, a salary of 37,000 a year but it lists several benefits including medical, retirement, life insurance, payed holidays, even free downtown parking, plus others. If the salary is kinda low, would the benefits make up for it? I have all the nessecary Education/experience for the job but it would require a move to a city 3 hour drive from here from Michigan to Indiana (worth it?) My husband likes this one actually and they are hiring three different people for almost the same exact jobs with the same salary and benefits (though two of them require you to supervise volunteers)

“Benefits” could mean anything. You should really inquire into your medical benefits. They might be decent....or they might be costly to you.

If this is a government job, it’s probable that you’ll get decent benefits. $37000 is not bad for an area with a low cost of living. But it’s a sucky salary in NYC.

It's a State of Indiana job. The NYC job, I have no clue what the salary is.

Another thing I am grappling with is if one of the AmeriCorps positions I interviwed for accepts me if I should take it, or if I should hold out to see if one of the regular jobs will hire me, but I haven't been invited to interview for them yet.

Honestly, in view of your tight finances, I would take the Americorps job if offered.

However, once you have been offered a job, you can ask for a couple days to think about it, and in that time, contact the other jobs to let them know you have an offer.

And I do recommend taking a couple days before accepting the offer, if they agree to hold it. At that point, factor in cost of living, relocation, ask for complete information about the health plan, and so on.

You have had SO MUCH TROUBLE due to low finances, not the least of the problems being having to rely on your unreliable relatives, that I think this is a time to stabilize your lifestyle in a healthy direction, before planning strategic career moves. You can always apply to more attractive jobs in a year or two.

Don't take my word for it, research it yourself, but I imagine that Indiana is a relatively low cost-of-living state.

I would take the state job over most jobs because of the benefits and job security. You can take a civil service test, and get even more job security.

A permanent job over a temporary job.

I’m a civil servant, by the way.

What sort of job is the Indiana job?

Also, as it's a state job, benefits could include a defined benefit pension. That is a rare thing in this day and age and can be very valuable, if you see yourself staying in the job long term.

Also, a job with benefits can get you into a long term disability insurance group without a medical exam.
