It is a bad thing to compromise your self-interest for the sake of niceness, by definition. It only discourages people who can afford not to be nice from being nice. If you know the consequences of not being nice are that someone will beat the crap out of you, the costs of not being nice
may outweigh those of being nice, which would mean you’re better off staying nice anyway. Only because you’re weaker than those who can instead be the ones beating the crap out of anyone who has a problem with their lack of niceness.
