It’s pretty scary to think about. The general consensus online seems to be that Down’s syndrome is terrible and must be eradicated, and that’s it’s straight up immoral to not abort.

I wonder if the same thing would happen to autism if a test was made.

I wouldn't do that. That would be like putting a disabled person in a gas chamber. I wouldn't do it.

I might would. I'm very prochoice(well more pro birth control) & I have no desire to have kids partly because I have LOTS of disabilities including autism that might be inherited. I think it's plain wrong to bring a kid into this would when you know he's going to be screwed up mentally & feel like a failure because of it.

We'll never be able to test for autism in the womb, since autism comes in many shapes and sizes, and has many causes.

Down Syndrome has only one cause: one extra chromosome in the 21st set of chromosomes (Trisomy 21).

I would choose to abort it.

I'm not against abortion but I do think it's cruel to use it just because a child might be born with a disability.

But then again not everyone is capable of raising a child with special needs for the rest of their lives and I get the feeling that nobody in society would want to adopt a child with special needs (to them it's no different than buying a broken car they would rather have a shiny working one).

I think it's a very complex issue and there is no real answer for it.

Yep......and I wouldn't abort a child with Down Syndrome, either.

I wonder if this should be moved to the section about Politics and Religion? Abortion is a very sensitive issue...

If something doesn't kill you, you can survive.
There is no condition that I would kill my child, and certainly not because of a disability.

If I was a woman the only reasons I would consider abortion would be:

1. If I found out my unborn child had a serious medical condition that was going to cause them to suffer a lot of pain and eventually kill them at a young age.

2. If I had a serious complication that meant I could potentially die giving birth (but I could potentially decide to go through with it anyway if somebody promised to take care of my baby in case I died).

3. If I was a very young teenage girl who made the mistake of having sex and was completely unprepared to raise a child and would have no support from my family or boyfriend (it would be a lot different if I had support).

I don’t want to bring another human into the world, so I’d abort it.

And at what spectrum severity would you set the limit? Mild? Severe? High Functioning? Seriously...

A lot of great people with great potential, even if plagued with severe counterpoints, would have never been given a chance! Think of all the great minds that were/are autistic, or were/are suspected autistic, that contributed to our civilization! A lot of our scientific breakthroughs, and incredible artistic creations comes from the minds of autistic contributors.

Even if no great endeavors are attained, give everyone a chance to experience life, music, enjoy a sunset, love and be loved.

I wouldn't have been in the least bit bothered if my parents had chosen to abort me.
