“In all fascist mythic pasts,” he writes, “an extreme version of the patriarchal family reigns supreme, even just a few generations ago…

“In the rhetoric of extreme nationalists, such a glorious past has been lost by the humiliation brought on by globalism, liberal cosmopolitanism, and respect for ‘universal values’ such as equality. These values are supposed to have made the nation weak in the face of real and threatening challenges to the nation’s existence.”

Stanley’s acute awareness of the power of the term, and the subtlety of his argument here, must contribute to the fact that he does not explicitly brand Trump a “fascist”. Nor does he harp on “Make America great again”.

It is a misfortune of yet-unknown dimensions that he does not have to.

America has long had a proto-fascist streak a mile wide and deep.

What is happening to America is going on to a greater or lesser degree elsewhere around the world. I fear future historians will remember this as the Age of the Strongman.

There's hope that freedom-loving Republicans will defeat the fascist and pass Tax cut 2.0.

  tax cuts just for the wealthy only empower more fascists to come out of the woodwork. and saying "freedom-loving repugnicans" is just like saying "shining blackness." none of today's GOPers care not one whit about anybody's "freedom" other than their own, to hell with everybody else lacking their financial talents.

tax cut 2.0 is to the poor/make the middle class tax cuts permanent , and offer additional tax cuts and benefits for the middle class

The evil Fascists (Democrats mostly) want to keep our money and use it for their own plans.

what about the working class? the working class only gets a crumb thrown to them during democratic administrations and only the back of the hand from GOP ones such as the present. I got NO GD tax cut!! ! but by all means go ahead and continue to invert reality to suit your own class purposes.

The article says "households in the lowest income quintile (households making up to $28,600) would receive an average tax cut of $100, or a 0.5% boost to after-tax income".

Thank you, president Trump.

That's *household* income.

$28,000/yr household income is poor/working class people.

The only tax cuts made permanent will be those for the rich. And as always, those funds will end up in the savings accounts of the wealthy, rather than being reinvested, meaning no new workers would be hired.

Let the wealthy right see the shades of the French Revolution.
