I've heard that saying "what" when someone calls your name is impolite. It's more polite to say "yes". Teachers at school would tell the students "don't say what, say yes" when they called their name.

I don't remember teachers telling me that when I was younger.

I say What sometimes because I'm not sure what the person said cuz I was focused on something else or because of background noise.

What's wrong with what?
You're asking what they want.
Why say yes when you don't even know what they want yet?

What the yes at school aims to teach is conformity and blind obedience.

I'm far too classy to say "what". Instead I say "Huh?"

I vaguely remember my grandma telling me this way back in the 80s.

She was very strict about manners.

When you don't hear someone the first time don't say what, say pardon was one of her favourites.

Personally I don't mind people saying "what" when I call their name as long as they're not saying it in a rude tone and they're not saying the words "do you want" after it.

I don't care for "what?" myself. But I hardly ever say anything about it.

Not only is it rude to answer "what", but someone else might say, "chicken butt" or something dumb like that.

the only reason to say yes is that your name is called during roll call

otherwise it's what

and if that ain't god enough for the eejits, then it's WTF do you want now!

Where I live "whatty?" is commonly said to young children when they call "Mommy" or "Daddy".

If your supervisor at work calls your name however it is probably best not to respond with "what?". I know I would never do so.
