The system we have in this world in my opinion dehumanises people. It turns people into cogs in a machine, a moneymaking machine. Every day I'm sure I see people in despair and I want to connect with them but can't. Perhaps they feel the same even though they put on a brave face and are full of confidence. Thoughts of the day.

Agreed. Society is going down the toilet and it's difficult to think what any of us can do to help. :(

First off, I agree. However...

I think it depends on where someone lives and what kind of society they live in. Some people live simple lives in agriculture-heavy nations but others live in service based nations. The only difference is we are exchanging simplicity and close community ties for a larger abundance of luxury items and protection, but all societies move in this direction.

People would much rather have a phone, powerful weapons, or medical care over healthy food, simple and self-directed lives, and happiness in a small community where everyone treats each other kindly. It's an exchange we've been making since the first hunter gatherers shifted over to farming societies and it continues because it is a logical choice, but not always the right one and is often unnecessary. There's a reason so many societies have a hard time "modernizing".

I think the solution is to allow greater mobility, and individual choice. I want to live how I want, pick things, do what makes me happy, all while being given more economic or employment options and lessen restrictions and formalities on individuals such as ourselves, especially regarding what is socially and economically accepted.

Yes, I agree the world is sick.
There's a problem with the way success (whether individual, corporate or government) is judged almost exclusively in economic terms, so that everything becomes about making money without addressing humanitarian concerns. Most of the smart people end up in BS jobs, making paper profits for their employer but producing nothing of true worth. And instead of doing the right thing for the country, governments play on fear and xenophobia to get votes.
Sad. So very sad

I agree. I think one problem is we tend not to design systems for people, but want people to conform to systems.

MrsPeel has struck the nail head-on. Smart people are seldom the financially successful ones and many governments are kakistocracies where the least deserving people are "leaders".

The world is full of the unsung heroes and heroines who get things done for the less fortunate humans and animals, and for the earth and the environment.

When it feels like the world is falling apart I think the best thing to do is remember to do something nice for somebody else without expecting anything in return. Pick up all the garbage you see on the ground instead if ignoring it, offer to buy a homeless man a hot meal, volunteer at an animal shelter, or collect money and donate to charity.

None of us can fix the entire world but at least we can try to make things better in our local areas.

In the wise words of Sting:

When the world is running down...you make the best of what's still around.

Agreed.
And I strongly believe that as long as you have your food and shelter, it's best to live to your own ideals.

There's good in the world....there's bad in the world.

Why do people always believe that "bad" predominates? I don't believe that.

It's just that the "bad" has more impact on us----makes us fear things more.

But I think how we live matters. If the world is wrong, why should not I be the best of right I can?

I think that's true. It's like when you suffer trauma and you never get over it.

Just because the "world is bad"---doesn't mean we have to be "bad."

People sometimes use the "world is bad" theorem as a justification for their own "bad" actions.

Like: "Mike gets away with murder; why shouldn't I get away with murder?"

Well, you have OCD, depression, alcohol abuse, and autism, so maybe your thoughts and beliefs are inaccurate?
