Prison barriers throughout history have been compromised by tunnels. Does that mean it's useless for them to have walls and fences?

Why bother with a tunnel when you can just fly in on a tourist visa?

How many more people are in this country illegally because they overstayed their visas?

Trump is living in a three-dimensional world with his two-dimensional mind.

Why bother locking your door at night when there's so many people who know how to jimmy doors and pick locks?

The “wall” is more symbolic of American xenophobia than something which will prove to be of use.

$5.7 Billion which could be put to better use. Even in other aspects of border security.

The wall is Trump’s blankie.

It decreases temptation and keeps the honest people honest.

Sure, put up the wall. Make it impenetrable to anyone on foot, deep enough to discourage people from tunneling under it, high enough to discourage people from flying over it, and wide enough to discourage people from sailing or swimming around it.

Illegal immigrants will still get through.

Like you say, any wall or fence is a deterrent. The majority can be tunneled under or climbed over or flown over. Despite their existence houses and buildings still get broken into hundreds of prisoners have escaped.

Deterrence is the most that anyone can expect. Using The Wall as a blockade against criminals while letting good, honest people through is an opium-laced pipe-dream.

That's the case with any wall or fence.

 Spend $30B on a wall and they’ll just fly to Canada and walk across the 5,000+ km long unprotected border.

You mean on commercial airliners or using their own private fleet?

it is very hard to keep pests out of where they want to be.
i had a jar of maple syrup, and it's lid was tightly secured, and it was in my cupboard for about 6 months before i wanted to use it.
when i accessed it, i found that there were thousands of dead ants in the jar.
how did they get there?

i also had a container of flour which was rigidly sealed, and i decided to make pancakes.
as i picked it up to open it, there were hundreds of pantry moths fluttering around inside the container.
how did they get there?

if things so stupid can thwart my attempts to deny their access, then it there is not much hope keeping humans out.

but australia is in a better situation.
we are an island really, so all our borders are surrounded by ocean.
but the only direction illegal immigrants approach us from is the north.
it is relatively easy to police. boats are easy to spot approaching.
our dillemma is how to treat them.

you guys have the hounds barking at your gates, and so there has to be a better way.
