Any idea on what caused it to explode?

The outer screens of most large flat screen televisions today is actually a sheet of plastic. So was your television an old cathode ray tube type?

It was the tempered glass base of the tv not the tv itself

There could of been a small crack while manufacturing

Well I figured I made a smart choice by not getting a glass T.V stand/base....guess I was right. Is your T.V ok? Might be better to look into a wooden T.V stand like so: the one thing guaranteed is it won't shatter no matter what.
