I prefer dogs cuz they're more predictable & routine oriented. Plus dogs are more trainable. There's a reason people use service dogs instead of service cats. Cats can learn but they rather do their own things or do what they want anyway instead of caring about what their owners want/need from them.

I have nothing against dogs (obviously since I have a service dog - wouldn't have gotten him if I did), but if I have to choose one, I'd say I prefer cats. They're easier on my ears (not necessarily quieter - my cat is quite talkative and will sometimes decide to wander around the house yelling for no reason I can determine, while my dog is pretty quiet unless he sees a person, especially someone with another dog, through a window - but a cat's meow is usually not as painful on my ears as a dog's bark, especially with smaller dogs), and it's much more instinctive for me to read a cat's body language and react accordingly than a dog's. Plus with my depression and medications for it, a lot of the time I don't have the energy to give a dog the exercise and stimulation it needs - I'm fortunate that my dog is pretty laid-back and my mom is willing to take him out to run in the backyard when I don't have the energy.

Yeah, it's really nice that you don't have to establish and maintain any kind of hierarchy with them :) I find cats to be an extremely relaxing presence and companion.

Dogs seem to need a periodic/occasional reminder of their place in the pack, especially if there are more people in the house. I find it tiring.

yeh, some dogs remind me of social-climbing humans :alien: or the opposite, some social climbing humans remind me of dogs/pack animals. :|

BenderRodriguez,

I feel the same way. While I have had both dogs and cats, and loved them all, cats will always be my favorite animals.

I'm actually more sensitive to the tone/pitch of cats meowing than I am of dogs barking. Cats require you to play with them to burn off their instinctive hunting energy & when you don't play enough with them, cats start attacking you when you pass by them & they start doing things they know they're not supposed to do in order to get attention.

All pets have needs you need to be aware of. If you keep an animal in captivity you have the responsibility to attend to its needs.

Ideally, people would choose pets with needs they don't mind or even enjoy.

Cats, they don't run up and attack me with friendship when I open the door.
