Anyone Else Heard Of Munchausen by Internet

I love researching disorders and this was a new one for me.

Anyone else heard of Munchausen by Internet

Munchausen by Proxy by Internet?

Maybe something like this...

"Dear friend, I am Princess Nkomo Mgambe. I email you because I read your posts and you seem much sympathise with people. My nephew she has nubolo disease needing surgery soonest. I am have no job to paying for doctor..."

What I have seen on the internet seems more like real issues presented chronically in a way to elicit sympathy and or attention. And I mean in the purely negative aspect of attention seeking.

I'm going though a brief respiratory illness right now and I could have gotten on the internet and made a huge drama out of it going on about fighting for breath and struggling to stay alive whoa is me. But it wouldn't be limited to that. I'd have a history of making such posts on a regular basis.

So I'm wondering if that's called anything other than attention seeking.

Munchausen by proxy is talked about in the video you posted.

True Munchausen is very different. People who suffer from this mental illness will actually poison or injure themselves to gain sympathy and attention, and when it's 'by proxy' they will poison or injure somebody somebody else for that attention (often their own children).

It is a true mental illness and those who suffer from it are a danger to themselves and others.

But if it's attention seeking through the internet then it's most likely not true Munchausen.

Sometimes they will poison or injure themselves or a child. Other times they will completely fake all of it over the internet, like that woman talked about in the video who faked having a brain tumor. You can't fake having a brain tumor in a hospital setting because an x-ray, CAT or MRI would easily disprove it. But on the internet one can fake the hell out of it. Post someone elses x-rays etc

Well I can promise you I've never lied about being sick or dying on the internet to gain attention.

On another forum I used to go on, there was someone who faked her own suicide. She came back with other accounts over the next few years, faking that she had cancer and other problems. She stole photos from MySpace to use as her own, and sometimes it was convincing because she got better at making things up. I’m not sure if it was always the same person, but it probably was. It wasn’t even a health support forum.
