Are climate change deniers really the problem?

That is an understatement.
Putting people down and insulting them is not going to win them over.
And the sooner Mr. Trump realizes that, the sooner this country can get back to leading the Free World.

Meanwhile anyone wanting to persuade others into believing in climate change science might want to consider it.

I think a problem is that people are skeptical because they have been hearing about the world coming to an end one way or another their whole lives. And also hearing about scientists changing their minds all the time. On top of that some people going on about climate change sound like kooks to them.

Another issue is climate change advocates making hyperbolic statements without an understanding of the fundamental underlying issues.

My standing position has been that it will be more feasible and less destructive for humanity to adapt to a warming world while slowly shifting our technology to a renewable base, than for humanity to take drastic action to prevent that warming by rapidly shifting our technology.

I strongly believe in the need for renewable energy and materials technology and have pursued a career in engineering research that will allow me to work on exactly that. I just don't think we should legislate massive changes into our society.

Ten Stages of Global Warming.

1. Ignore the Warnings.
2. Deny the Danger.
3. Business As Usual.
4. Realize the Crisis.
5. Blame and Shame Someone Else.
6. Panic.
7. Try to Escape.
8. Scream for Help
9. Realize You're Doomed.
10. Die.

You underestimate the average person.

Some really cool maps here:
https://climatecommunication.yale.edu/v ... geo=county

In short, 70% of Americans believe in global warming. In every single county in America, at least 50% of people think climate change is happening.

Only 57% of Americans think that climate change is mostly man-made. This is somewhat worrying, but still shows the average American is reasonably well-informed.

Only 49% of Americans think that most scientists think global warming is happening. I'm very surprised by that! Meanwhile, 62% think global warming is affecting the weather.

61% are worried about global warming, 70% think it will harm future generations, plants, and animals, and 77% support regulation of CO2 as a pollutant.

After some high-profile reports from the IPCC last year, Americans are getting even better informed - see here for example: https://www.vox.com/2019/1/28/18197262/ ... carbon-tax

And America is not alone in any of this.

I thought the problem was with excessive carbon emissions--and pollution from the disposable, throwaway mentality we inherited from the 1950s "boomer" culture.

This is probably too simplified.

It may also help if those who were wanting change to occur made changes to their own lifestyle/habits/actions, rather than just demand others make changes.

After all, being told sea-level will rise and wipe out coastal properties while owning coastal property, or saying we need to cut back on flying to reduce CO2 while flying overseas regularly for conferences rather than holding conference on-line is likely to cause people to think that maybe the issue isn't as bad as claimed (Not to mention stating a theoretical tipping point that seems to keep getting pushed back, which indicates either a lack of certainty, or misunderstanding of underlying cause).

Is there really anyway we can stop anthropogenic climate change at this stage anyway?

Why do they have to be the problem? They're certainly a problem.

If you want people to believe in global warming, make sure that actions against it are not a threat to democracy. That's where the issue lies.
