What are your opinions on the character Forrest Gump played by Tom Hanks?

I liked him. Even though he wasn't autistic (he was actually mentally ret*d I think?) I found him relatable because of his unique view on the world around him. He had his own brand of wisdom and philosophy that the "normal" people around him couldn't understand. He thoroughly enjoyed his life, even during the worst of times, and the people who thought of him as "stupid" were all pretty miserable.

The only thing that bothered me about him though was the misconception that the mentally challenged are unphased by tragedy around them that would traumatize anybody else. Like when he was fighting in Veitnam for example. It's like the movie was trying to say that a man like Forrest would not be disturbed by the horrors of war like "normal" people.

But I still love this movie.

I haven't watched it in years, but I remember it was a good film. A lot of films Tom Hank is in are very good. My favourite is Sleepless in Seattle. It's so cosy to watch.

A more recent film he was good in was Sully. That was really good.

Another one of my favorite Tom Hanks films was "The Green Mile". What did you think of that one? :)

My sister is actually the one who introduced me to Forrest Gump. It's one of her favorite movies. :)

I haven't seen it since I was a kid but from what I remember I felt I related to him in the sense of people thinking he was stupid. Lots of my peers believed I was stupid at best & actually ret*d at worst. I didn't really relate to him in most other ways thou. I don't really have a brand of wisdom or philosophy & I was fairly unhappy with life.

I was very much treated the same way growimng up. :(

I liked how Forrest was able to appreciate all the simple things in life, and he was completely non-judging. :)

I'm pretty sure he was very disturbed when Bubba was killed.

He was sad any time his friends or family died, but he clearly was not bothered by the actual war itself. Being as slow as he was I doubt he even grasped what the war was actually about. Plus he was lucky not to see some of the really bad things that went on in that war.

I'd compare Forrest to "The Fool" in tarot card readings. A simple man journeying through life with his own unique brand of wisdom. : :jester:
