Hey Guys,

Very happy to find this forum as I have read a lot of useful information before even registering.

I am born and raised in China, came to America for college. Somehow I figured out I am on the spectrum and got a diagnosis this April. A couple months ago I moved to New York City and started a DIY art gallery in my living room. Now that I am here, I really look forward to making friends with aspies in the city.

At the moment, my special interests are psychology, archery and of course art.

I'd like to know what you are interested in, and some fun facts about your topics if you're willing to share.

Thank you for reading~

Hi! I've lived in NYC all my life.

Are you aware of Aspies for Social Success? I plan to attend their support group meeting on Wednesday, August 14.

These days my main "special interest" is learning about the autism community, with the aim of eventually doing what I can to help build a much bigger and better-organized autistic community than now exists (so that more of us can more easily find both jobs and friends), based on my past experiences with the LGBT rights movement and various oddball subcultures.

Other than that my main interest these days is computer programming.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

"Veteran" just means someone who has posted 500 or more messages here on WP.

You're now an "Emu Egg." You'll see this change to various creatures as you post more messages.

I look forward to seeing you at the AFSS meeting.

Aspies for Social Success is a peer-led organization.

Here in NYC there are also some free support groups led by professional social workers and psychotherapists, sponsored by what used to be called the Aspergers and High Functioning Autism Association, which recently merged with the New England-based Asperger/Autism Network (AANE). Traditionally they hold a support group for adults (both men and women) on the spectrum on the third Tuesday of every month (EXCEPT July and August) and a support group for women on the spectrum on the fourth Tuesday of every month (EXCEPT July, August, and December). Hopefully they'll be starting up again in September, but I haven't seen a specific announcement about this yet. Hopefully their fall calendar will soon appear at the bottom of this page on the AANE website. Their meetings are usually held from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, and are usually held at Spectrum Services, 303 Fifth Avenue, Suite 1003, 10th Floor.

EDIT: I just now found an updated calendar for AANE-NY here. See the section titled "Groups for Individuals on the Spectrum." The relevant groups are "Adult Group" and "Women's Adult Group."

Please see my edit at the bottom of my previous post for more up-to-date info about AHA (now AANE-NY).

I think it's good to have BOTH kinds of organizations -- peer-led groups like AFSS and professional-led groups like AANE-NY. The peer-led AFSS support group is usually smaller, more intimate, more relaxed, and a little longer (6:30 to 8:30 PM vs. 6:30 to 8:00 PM) than the AHA adult support group. After both meetings, a bunch of us usually go out to dinner, usually at the Skylight Diner at 34th Street and 9th Avenue.

Hi amygda,

I’m an emu egg too. When I first saw the emu egg thing I thought it was a reference at my being from Australia. (The Emu is native to Australia).

I too was diagnosed in April and have an interest in art and psychology

Hey New York I'm in San Francisco.
New to all this but it sounds like I found my ism, my tribe among the different kinds of thinkers. I've always felt out of click with the world and I think it's important to have a place to find allies and hang out. Most of my life I've stayed away from people but somewhat different now that I've gotten older. It's like I no longer care much if people don't like me, hell most of my life I haven't liked me. I think I'm not so bad these days just have to keep all them voices out of my head or at least don't let them drive the car anymore and stay between the lines. .ive been told that I'm crazy all my life, it really bothered me at one time. Now I think yeah so what? Do I win a cookie or something?
I am at a point in my life where I'm really understanding the importance of networking and finding allies in this struggle to have our voice heard and building a world where everyone has a place.

Well that's my soapbox speech for to day.
I'll be taking votes for world leader shortly.

I see myself described everywhere concerning autism. And am anxious to learn more.

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

I have a wide variety of special interest. The list just keeps getting longer every year. One of my special interest is cataclysmic research.

Do they have many individuals in China who are on the spectrum and how well are they accepted there?
