Quote:
Socialist and communist governments have nationalized all sorts of things: oil and gas fields, phone companies, steel mills, coal mines, airlines and farms. Now the American Medical Association, which generally does not favor collective ownership of the means of production, has proposed to go even further. It suggests nationalizing corpses.
The United States has a severe shortage of kidneys, livers, lungs and other human organs needed by patients awaiting transplants. The AMA thinks we might close the gap between supply and demand by confiscating body parts from people who no longer need them.
Today, you have to agree in advance to donate your organs in case of your untimely demise. In a system of "presumed consent," by contrast, you would automatically surrender them, unless you gave specific instructions to the contrary.
"Presumed consent" is a nice euphemism for something well short of real consent. It's bad enough the government expects to live off the sweat of your brow while you are among the living, or insists on collecting estate taxes when you have the misfortune to die. But now it's going to extract a literal pound of flesh before allowing you the peace of the grave?

At least someone will be using the spare parts...

I mean organs are expensive... I've heard there are a lot of organs from political prisoners in China... compared to that this is quite humane...

We should use our inmates that way. We could increase the number of capital offenses on the books, as death row inmates they would be kept in solitary confinement so they would have a hard time transmitting and contracting diseases, perform medical tests on them to make sure they are healthy enough to use their organs, and use hanging instead of leathal injection so that the organs and tissue will still be good. You could use firing squads (I wouldn't mind doing that instead of jury duty), but you would have to use all headshots.

I don't have any problem with that - I'm not doing anything with my bits after I die . . .

That's actually what they do in China...

It sounds cruel but at least they can use the spare parts to save innocent lives...

When you think about it... your body is just a vehicle or shell... it has no more spiritual or moral signifigance than a 72 cadillac convertible or university jacket...

They're trying to push organ donation here too. Current affairs shows are always doing promotional stories on how some kiddie/mother's life was saved by an organ donor and what a wonderful thing it is and how Australia has incredibly low donation rates. My sister had a friend with kidney disease ask her to be tested for a kidney donation, ugh. She was really freaked out by it, unfortunately she WAS suitable, but was able to decline as a family member volunteered.

I think one's organs should be available to any family member, apart from that, it's a bit creepy. I wouldn't mind a lung transpant in about 10 years though! cough cough

Yep. I would have no problem whatsoever with the bits of my shell still in working order being used to help others.

Are there any bits of you, apart from that 1, that are still in working order?

Yeah, I would not mind for them to use my bits. The worms will eat it anyway...if they don't burn me. I don't know they would want any bits of me anyway...maybe one bit....or other...

I don't see why using dead peoples' organs is such an awful thing....Once you're dead, you don't need your body anymore, so why shouldn't lives be saved with it? Anyways, if they assumed that, people could take steps before they die to show that they *didn't* want their organs used, although I can't imagine why anyone would have a problem with that

So, they want my bits after I'm dead? All they've done is take, take, take. They take the money I work hard for, they are allowed to take my land if they want to, regardless if I pay my property taxes or not, they even are taking away Social Security (that I've paid into since I was 15 years old) that I could have used when I got older, and giving me nothing in return. Why shouldn't they own my body after I die?

So what's in it for me? Will they foot the bill for my funeral and burial plot so that my family members don't have to go through that financial burden? Will they not tax my family members for what little I leave them? Oh I see, they want my bits for free. Will they make the recipient of my bits pay for the corneas or the liver they take from my body? Oh, they have to pay. Hmmmm - seems like another win, win, situation for the government.

Hey, I've got an idea. (sarcasm alert!) Why wait until someone is dead. Let's just have the government take what they want as they do with everything else. We all can be harvested like cattle for the rich and famous.

Maybe the US can be just like the movie Soylent green where when you die they grind your body up and use it to feed the poor while the rich get the nice beef from cattle. Why wait though, when there are so many ready for harvest right now that are considered inferior and worthless to society. (/sarcasm alert!)

Okay, my bitter-mode is over with. I think I'll be keepin' all my bits though, selfish as it sounds. The worms seem worthy.
