It’s fascinating how people say they “hoover” their carpet.

What do you use: “hoover,” or “vacuum cleaner”?

I think hoovering is a UK and Canadian thing. I notice it when reading British authors.

Older people in the US call their refrigerator “the Frigidaire.”

Up until about 10 years ago, people used to “Xerox” when they made copies.

I use a vacuum, and I vacuum my partment. I have never used "Hoover" to mean anything other than a brand name.

I have NEVER heard anyone of any generation ever use "hoover" as a verb, or even as noun for all vacuum cleaners.

Though I do a recall an anectdote mom and dad used to tell about a British couple they met while traveling across Europe way back before I was born. The husband was trying to impress my parents about his knowledge of American politics ...so he pontificated that "Hoover may not have made a great US president, but he sure has been a great head of the FBI!". I told my parents "you should have told that guy that you agreed, and that 'he also manufactures a great vacuum cleaner!'".

But on the other hand I do use Kleenexes (whether they are made by that company or not), and I still "Xerox" things.

I've never heard of anyone in Canada referring to their vacuum cleaner as "Hoover", or use it as a verb. I always thought Hoover was exclusively an American brand. :?

We all say 'hoover' at my house. I know it's wrong, but I say it anyway . I'm not sure why- maybe because it's shorter to say? Perhaps it is a UK thing, but I know other people here who say 'Vacuum'.

Ya' mean like in snorting a line of coke?

Do folks still 'snort' coke these days?. Or is it all consumed via crack these days? Lol!

Have been around folks who were involved in substance abuse, but Ive never heard that expression. But I can imagine that being a cool piece of slang for consuming a drug via sucking it through your nostril. Making like youre an Electrolux, or a Hoover, and just "hovering up my whole stash! You bastard!"
