I had a couple over the years. They put you out during the procedure. Just as you start to come to afterwards, you see the doctor and nurses and they are very excited and show you pictures of the result of the colonoscopy and explain the details. But since you are barely conscious, by the time you fully wake up, you don't remember anything that they had said. And they have moved onto another patient, so you can't really ask them.

So my advice is to ask the doctors to give you a debriefing after you are fully awake or annotate on the photograph the results of the colonoscopy.

do they still make you drink castor oil the night before?

Yep and the morning of the procedure. This is one of the few times I a glad I have a feeding tube. :D

No, they use the "Michael Jackson drug" that's like a light switch going out and coming to. If you try to talk to the docs on the way out, you'll wake up with a memory of getting cut off in the middle of a word :roll:.

gads, the castor oil is the worst thing. :eew: my mom wished she could die so she wouldn't have to drink that gallon of ghastliness.

I'm terrified of ever having a colonoscopy. I don't think I would get on with having to take all that stuff to wash your guts out, as I have a thing about diarrhoea (sensory issue thing), it just grosses me out and makes me anxious.

And the colonoscopy is so embarrassing. Yes I know everyone has a butthole but that still doesn't stop me from feeling shy about the subject of bowels, pooping and farting with nurses.

Once someone I know had a colonoscopy and after it she was asked if she had "passed wind" yet. That has got to be the most humiliating question ever been asked in the history of mankind. When I had a procedure on my sinuses I wasn't asked if I sneezed before leaving the hospital.

It is a gross thing that hopefully you won’t have to endure until you are over 50 and by that time they will have found a less strenuous way of doing this The procedure does involve putting a lot of air in there so passing wind is a medically necessary question.
As rough as the experience is it is not nearly as bad as colon cancer.

I used to be just as embarrassed as you about these personal things but I have been through so much health wise I have lost a lot of the embarrassment around medical personnel. The nurses see a lot worse every day and the nurses in the colonoscopy area see bowels and their output every day.

Having been around med staff my whole life, I'm pretty desensitized about anything along those lines.

It's only "gross" if you are not given a general anesthetic.

I remember the night my dad drank a whole bottle of laxative for the procedure. He's a bit of a comic and was very vocal while in the bathroom. Liam and I were rolling on the floor with laughter.
