For some reason I wonder whether people like terrorists are really criminals even though they have a committed horrendous death and destruction such as 911.

They broke the law, which is a crime, and that makes them criminal. Even a justified act is criminal under an unjust law. And considering that there is no public terrorism justifiable for any reason, then the acts are both unjust and criminal--and it's a waste of time talking about it.

Because I am trying to write a book about criminals and I know a part of me thinks terrorism today is a crime I think others see them as freedom fighters but I don't see 911 as the act of a freedom fighter.

They are criminals. That’s the end of it.

Somebody could up and kill you, and think it’s a “great cause.”

Good luck with your book.

Go ahead and write them as criminals. A "freedom fighter" does not attack someone far away from himself. Islamists attacking British citizens are not fighting for freedom; they're trying to change British culture. The riots in Charlottesville North Carolina by the white power movement were not trying to free themselves from some stifling black-imposed oppression, they were just being hateful people and committed vehicular homicide.

Don't worry about the fringe views, and everybody loves a good crime book so let us know how that goes!

Terrorists are criminals.

People who think otherwise are either delusional, terrorist sympathizers, or terrorists themselves.

I'm not deluded I'm just not sure if all forms of terrorism are defined as criminal. I found few books in true crime about terrorism and even other people like the nazis were not included because even though they committed terrible things they acted or believed they acted with the approval of their society's legal codes which is one of the reasons they are not included.

... I found few books...
Whether or not terrorism is declared as 'criminal' depends on who writes those books.

It would not surprise me if some Ayatollah wrote a fatwa declaring that the attacks on 9/11 were not only justified under definitions of 'jihad', but that they were blessed by Allah.

One thing is--this is usually the domain of a world history book, not the smaller focus of the average true-crime historian. I wouldn't over think it. Besides, if you want to cover massive atrocities, you could write a second book about this legalized sort of terrorism practiced by the world's greatest evil regimes.

Don't forget Pol Pot!

If their actions are ruled unlawful by an authority such as a court or coroner, then yes.
