I'm so worried about this. The media says it's worrying. Will it be like the black plague?
Even if it will only kill medically vulnerable people it's a worry because my mother is battling with cancer and she might get it and die.

There's always something to worry about. I hate having so many worries.

Yes I nearly went insane with panic.

I don’t blame you for being worried.

But they will stem this virus. It primarily is confined, at this point, to one city in China, Wuhan.

People are banned from traveling from that city to other places. Wuhan is effectively quarantined.

They've shut down a second city.

And a third as well.

By the way: most people don’t get severely sick from this coronavirus.

Anybody coming into a US airport from these three cities must be screened upon arrival. I assume it is the same for the UK.

Stay healthy -- eat right, drink lots of water (no alcohol), avoid inhaling anything other than clean air, get plenty of exercise, et cetera. If you get the virus while your health is otherwise good, you will likely feel less miserable and recover more quickly.

There's a couple of cases here in the UK now apparently. I knew it wouldn't be long before it made it's way over here.

I wouldn't know if my boyfriend has it or not because he has frequent coughing and shortness of breath due to smoking.

Me too. I woke up with a cough and sore throat, a little head congestion. Next thing I'm worried about coronavirus, or whatever it's called. No fever... so maybe that's good.

Coronavirus - what you need to know

In early January 2020, the World Health Organisation identified a new strain of virus sweeping across China, known as 2019 novel coronavirus. Here, I explain what you need to know about coronavirus.

What is coronavirus?

The coronavirus is actually a very common kind of virus. Most types cause infection in the nose, sinuses and upper respiratory tract, causing symptoms of the common cold such as a runny nose, headache or sore throat. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous and symptoms usually subside within 3 to 7 days.

There are currently 6 recognised types of coronavirus that can infect humans. Common types include:

*229E (alpha coronavirus)
*NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
*OC43 (beta coronavirus)
*HKU1 (beta coronavirus).

However, there are certain rarer types of the virus that can be more dangerous to humans. One type called MERS-CoV, which causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), killed around 858 people in the Middle East between 2012 and 2015. Another type, known as SARS-CoV, is the coronavirus responsible for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which killed 774 people in 2003.

In early January 2020, the World Health Organisation identified a new type of coronavirus called 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the virus responsible for the current epidemic in China. There have been around 580 confirmed cases to date and 25 deaths in China; however, these numbers continue to rise as the virus spreads to other countries.
What are the symptoms of 2019-nCoV?

The virus can cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which is the disease responsible for the recent deaths in China. This is a serious form of pneumonia that causes extreme respiratory distress, resulting in difficulty breathing, and sometimes death.

Symptoms may include:

*Fever, sweating, and chills
*Dry or mucus cough
*Sore throat
*Headache
*Sore muscles
*Loss of appetite, low energy, and fatigue
*Chest pain
*The virus may also cause 'stomach flu' symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhoea.

Don't panic if you feel you have a selection of these symptoms, as they can be caused by a bad bout of flu. However, it is sensible to check with your doctor or A&E if your symptoms check out with those listed, especially if you have recently been travelling abroad.

Those with a weakened immune system will be most at risk of developing serious symptoms, such as elderly people and people with heart disease. Those who have died following contraction of the virus have been known to be in poor health already.
How is coronavirus spread?

Coronaviruses spread the same way as other cold-causing viruses: through infected people coughing or sneezing onto surfaces/objects or into the air surrounding other people; close contact with an infected person; touching infected surfaces such as door handles, taps, or toilet flushes, and then touching your mouth, nostril, or eyes.

There is no vaccine for the coronavirus, in any of its forms; however, to help reduce your chances of becoming infected, you should do the same things you do to avoid other illnesses:

*Wash hands thoroughly with hot water and soap after using the toilet, before eating or handling food, and if you have been touching surfaces which could be contaminated, such as when using public transport, or using a trolley or basket in the supermarket.
*Avoid close contact with infected people.
*Keep hands and fingers away from your eyes, nose, and mouth unless you have just washed them.
*Disinfect any surfaces or objects which could be contaminated.
*Don't share towels or flannels with others.

Preventative measures

As well as following the preventative techniques above, there are other things you can do to strengthen your immune system and help reduce the chance of suffering a coronavirus infection.

The human immune system responds well to sufficient sleep1, reduction in stress levels2, moderate exercise3, good diet full of vegetables and unprocessed/unrefined foods, and low intake of refined sugar, processed fats, alcohol and nicotine.4

Vitamin C and zinc are important for the health of the mucous membranes in your respiratory tract, and for maintaining the normal function of your immune cells.5 Keeping your intake of these nutrients up is therefore a good strategy for supporting immune function and respiratory tract tissue.

Whilst dietary and lifestyle measures can support good immune function, and many natural remedies are useful and effective for countering common colds and flu infections, natural remedies such as herbal extracts are not indicated in treating serious infections such as SARS-CoV. Anyone who is concerned that they may have come across the virus should seek medical advice immediately.

The media had everyone in hysterics about the SARS corona virus, too. And very few people were infected or killed by it.

In terms of sheer numbers, you’d be better off worrying about heart disease or cancer than this an an acute concern.

In general, though, mass pandemics are a bit concerning due to the large human population, rapid international travel, the evolution of viruses & bacteria, lack of vaccines against new viruses or antibiotic resistant bacterial strains etc and over the decades ahead we will Need new forms of medicine to head off widespread casualties. BUT, that’s just a long term generalization and there’s no reason to lose sleep over it Today. The sky isn’t falling. You’re not going to get sick and die from taking your next breath. Try to just relax and if you must think about it at all, think about how minuscule the % of the affected population has been and is likely to remain.

Then there’s me.. living where tons of people travel to and from China on MANY daily flights.. if either of us was going to worry much about this it really ought to be me, and tbh I’m not really that overly concerned.

Oh, and according to a health expert in the news, breathing masks don’t do much to block the spread of this virus and the number one thing people can do is hand washing as I guess it’s more probable to contract a virus via touching someone or something that’s contaminated and then touching your mouth/eyes/nose/food, so, if you must take action to relax: wash your hands several times/day. 8)

Sounds like a few people here in the states have got it too from traveling to China. I hope this isn’t the AIDS of the 21st century.

I remember all the panic over ebola around 2014.

Isn't there a big epidemic of some killer strain of flu, or whatever, that everyone is worried about during the winter each year?

What was it last year?

Well I'm hoping the media is making it sound bigger than what it is.

What's scary about it is it can be passed on through sneezing or coughing into the air, and you can't avoid breathing in airbourne germs in the air in public. And because it's a new virus, nobody has any immunity to it, so we are all at risk of catching it.

That's how the flu spreads. From what I last saw it has a small percentage death rate. Which usually means those who died were close to death before they contracted it.
